Klan Leader Ends His Own Life; Funeral Is Held At Salisbury Funeral services (or Grady B. Mars, 41, retired Army policeman and Ku Klux Klan leader, were conducted at the National Cemetery In Salisbury Tuesday with 30 robed (Clans men among the 300 mourners. A bugler played "Taps" as the casket was lowered Into the grave. Thirty or more uniform ed security guards stood by. Mars, grand klallff?or vice president?of the North Caro lina Klan, ended his own life at his home In Granite Falls Sat urday night. He had made his home at Warrenton for about two. years prior to moving to Granite Falls several weeks ago and had operated a garage at Areola. Mars died of a pistol wound In his head while en route to Rowan Hospital. Coroner Rufus Honeycutt ruled the deathasul clde. Officers said Mars'wife, Jane, and daughter, Sandy, 12 were In the house when the shooting occurred. Rowan County Coroner Rufus Honeycutt said there was no evi dence of foul play. He said he was conducting a routine Inves tigation to determine whether the Incident was suicide. Honeycutt said Mars was shot with a .38 caliber bullet. Officers said Mrs. Mars gave this account: Mars was working on his car and asked his wife If she could find some parts for the car. She left the bedroom to search for the parts In the kitchen. A .38 caliber pistol was In the bed room. She said she heard a shot, turned and saw her husband fall through the bedroom door way Into the hall. The pistol was beside him. Mrs. Mars said her husband has been despondent since at tending the Klan hearings In Washington. Negro Man Injured In One-Car Wreck Taken To Hospital A Warren County Negro man was hospitalized around 10:30 on Saturday night when he was Involved In a one-car wreck. P. I. Person of Rt. 3, Wa.r renton, suffered head lacera tions when he was thrown from his car after he had lost con trol of the vehicle while travel ing east on Highway No. 43 near Areola. He was taken to jubilee Hospital In Henderson. Highway Trooper V. R. Vaughan, who Investigated the accident, said yesterday that Person has been charged with reckless driving. He said that Person's car caught fire after overturning. Girl Scouts Visit Governor's Mansion Nineteen girls from Junior Girl Scout Troop 725 visited Raleigh Saturday where they attended the open house at the Governor's Mansion, which was beautifully decorated by the Raleigh Garden Clubs. This oc curs only every four years. The girls also toured the North Carolina State House and the Museum of Natural History. They were accompanied by Mrs. E. T. Miss King Is Named Head Of Areola Club Lou Ellen King was elected ? president of the Areola 4-H t Club at Its regular meeting at the Areola Community House on Monday night. She presided over the meeting. Other officers elected were: Kitty Norwood, Vice president; Terry Mustlan, secretary and treasurer: Scott Pittman, song leader; Joe Allen Shearln, re porter. The pledges were lead by Mrs. Carl Fleming. Christmas carols and 4-H songs were sung. Games were played and then cookies, potato chips, peanuts and cold drinks were served to the seven members present. Enterprise HD Club Has Christmas Party The Enterprise Home Dem onstration club met at the Ep worth-Enterprise community building on Thursday of last week for a luncheon, a regular meeting and a Christmas party. The building was decorated in a Christmas motif and featured a decorated tree surrounded by gifts. The dining table was covered with a white cloth centered with an arrangement of polnsettlas. The menu consisted of fried chicken, chicken salad, pimento cheese sandwiches, ham bis cuits, casseroles, congealed salads, candled yams, assorted pickles, assorted pies and coffee. Mrs. Alma Webster, president, returned thanks. Following the meal a brief business session was held. Mrs. Webster gave the devotional. Christmas carols were sung and gifts were exchanged. Mrs. Er nest Bobbitt was winner of the door prize. Those present were Mes dames Alma Webster, Ernest Bobbitt, E. M. Jones, R, A. King, Ernest Walker, Hal Bobbitt, Dave Bobbitt, B. F.
