Agriculturally Speaking Inez Community Club And Fire Dept. House Given Coat Of Paint By FRANK REAMS County Ext. Chairman COMING EVENTS March 19*25; Poison Pre vention Week. March 22-24: Extension Agent's Conference, Durham. FACE LIFTING The Inez Community Club House and the Inez Auxiliary Rural Fire Department serve a vital need in that community. As in many other similar com munities in Warren County, a lot of barbecued chicken, ham suppers and other means of raising money takes place to pay the tab for these com munity activities. All of this consumes a lot of men and women hours. Not too many months ago, the Inez Club painted the entire club house and refinished the floor. Just a few weeks ago, the community decided the fire house needed a fresh coat of paint also, so that is what the pictures verify. One picture shows the fire truck packed outside the fire house. It was so cold that day the painters fired up the stove and worked inside. Shown painting inside (1 to r) are: Harry Williams, III, and Wade Taylor. Not shown but painting just to the right of the camera were Frederick Williams, S. T. Alston. Harry Williams, Jr., and the Rev. James Coile. The following Saturday, the weather was much warmer so those shown painting outside are: (1 to r) Jimmie Fowler, Martin Fowler, Firt Chief, Harry Williams, Jr., and Harry Williams, in. It is good to observe such outstanding | cooperation as this and can't help but create a more live able atmosphere In a com munity. Tobacco Observed as delegates at tending the 1967 district meet ing of the Flue-Cured Tobacco 'Stabilization at Fuquay Springs were: Erich E. Hecht and Boyd M. Reams. Those attending the 1967 Tobacco Associates annual meeting were: Dennis Harris and C. W. Currin. Both these organi zations have been very vital in the tobacco program and it is hopeful tobacco produc ers take an occasional in ventory of wh^t is taking place. It is no easy to take some things for granted but suggest these two organiza tions be taken seriously. Poison Prevention Week It is tragic that each year we in America allow 500 child ren to die due to accidental poisoning and another 500,000 to be poisoned non-laially. Let us pledge that during Nation al Poison Prevention Week - March 19-25, 1967, we will survey our homes, yards, out buildings, and other places where poisonous materials may be found and eliminate hazardous situations. Since so many of the poisonings occur In the home, let us carry out a poison proofing operation Poison Control Center-Duke Please note - There has been a telephone number change for the Poison Con trol Center at Duke Univer sity Hospital. Please change the number to 919-684-4811, Extension 3866. Dr. Jay Arena and Dr. Shirley Osterhout are in charge of this Poison Con trol Center. Ex perts In the field are quick to point out that many child ren are poisoned each year by absorbing various toxic sub stances through the skin. In fants still in the crawling stage are most susceptible to this type of poisoning. L. B. May Named Ranger At Nutbush A Warrenton man has been appointed a ranger at Kerr Lake, it was disclosed this week by Howard L. Stewart, manager of the Kerr Reser voir Development Commis sion. Stewart said that Alvin May of Warrenton has been appointed a ranger to fill a vacancy caused by the resig nation of Lawrence Kearson, a member of the staff for the past two years. He left at the end of February to accept a position as biologist with the N. C. Wildlife Resources Commission. May, a Warrenton native who recently completed ser vice in the Navy, has been assigned to the Nutbush Bridge recreation area. Ranger Wayne Parham has been transferred from Nutbush Bridge to Satterwhite Point, filling the post formerly held by Kearson. Stewart said considerable favorable weather during the winter has made it possible to go ahead with improvements in all park areas. "We have already had some fairly large weekend crowds," he said, "and we expect to have all facilities ready when the real ly big turnouts start." TO HOLD REVIVAL The Rev. Albert T. W. MONROE GARDNER ABOUT THIS QUESTION: "I hear that 100,000 local agents all across the coun try belong to a National Association of Independent Insurance Agents. Is the Warrenton Insurance Agency a member of NAIA, pledged to give personal assistance and claim ser vice to a traveler who is a client of any one of them?" Wirrenton INSURANCE AGENCY Gardner Building 257-3104 Soil Conservetion News White Says Good Forage Plan Essential For Beef Cattle Profits By NAT WHITE Soil Conservation A good forage program is a must for any profitable War ren County beef operation. A great deal of planning, timing, work and management is necessary to have high quality food available to a beef herd at all times. The large num ber of overgrazed pastures is a matter of concern to the Warren Soil Conservation District Supervisors. Most local beef herds have sur plus pasture in the spring and early summer and a shortage in the hot time of summer and the winter months. The Soil Conservation Ser vice offers assistance to farmers in planning a sound forage program. This plan provides for grazing during the entire year with a mini mum of hay and silage. In many instances cropland can be rotated between row crops and tall fescue; a rotation that benefits the row crops as well as helping provide pasture in the winter months. A sound forage program may have 1.2 to 1.5 acres of permanent legume-grass pas ture, 0.3 to 0.5 acreof tall fes cue alone, and 0.3 to 0.5 acre of Bermuda grass pas ture per anlmaLdhlt. The per manent pastufe will provide grazing in the spring, early summer, and fall. The Ber muda grass will furnish pas ture during the summer and fall from May through Octo ber. The fescue alone can be used to winter the herd on after the permanent pasture has been grazed to the desir ed height. Surplus forage can be cut for hay and stored for use when needed. There are many plants and combination of plants that can be used to good advantage In a beef cattle program. These plants should be chosen to fit the soils, the needs of the herd, the seasons when need ed, and to complement the en tire farm operation. Each year the farmer needs to plan his forage program to provide plenty of good forage each month of the year. A farmer needs to plan a good forage program to pro vide adequate food for his herd at all times. The chart above will serve as a good tool to use In planning the program.
