News and Events of Interest To Norlina Readers MRS. IMOGENE ARNOLD, Editor Mrs. M. S. Turner of Fair Bluff spent several days this week with her daughter and son-in-law, the Rev. and Mrs. Bruce Pate. Mr. and Mrs. Pate accompanied Mrs. Turn er to the Raleigh-Durham Air port on Wednesday from which she left for a visit with her son in Heidleburg, Germany. Mrs. Ray Ledford and chil dren of Raleigh visited Mr. and Mrs. Alton Paschall this week. Miss Marie Taylor of Ox ford spent several days this week with Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Rooker, Mr. C. V,' Adams of Win ston-Salem is spending some time with his daughter, Mrs. Clyde Adams. Mr. and Mrs. B. M. Pate of Institute spent last week end with their son, the Rev. Bruce Pate, and family. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wig gins visited Mr. and Mrs. Gil bert Wiggins in Henderson on Fridat tight. Mrs. T. W. Wolfe is receiv ing treatment at McPherson's Hospital in Durham. Mrs. E. G. Hecht has re turned from Warren General Hospital. Miss Dinah Clarke of UNC G, Greensboro, spent the weekend with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Clarke. Mrs. James Harper is apa tient at Maria Parham Hospi tal in Henderson. Mr. and Mrs. Elmo Blanks of Henderson visited Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Arnold on Sun day afternoon. Mr. A. A. Kimpson is a patient at Warren General Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Wolfe and family of Wilmington, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Mull and Mrs. D. E. Woody of Chase City, Va., and Mrs. Loyd Frances of Washington, D. C., were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. T. W. Wolfe. Carolyn Keeter Has Birthday Party Carolyn Keeter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hartwell Keeter, celebrated her fifth birthday Friday at a lawn party at her home on Liberty Street. Games were played and gifts were opened. Party hats and whistles were given as favors. The lovely birthday cake with burning tapers was deco rated in pink and green. Cake, nuts and soft drinks were served. Thirteen children were pre sent. Also present for the occasion were the following relatives: Carolyn's grand mother, Mrs. George Keeton of Henderson, her great-aunt, Mrs . Eva Woody of Butner, and her great-grandfather, Mr. C. V. Adams of Winston Salem. ATTEND MEETING Those representing the Norlina Junior Woman's Club at the meeting of the North Carolina Federation of Women's Clubs in Pinehurst this week were Mrs. John Kil ian and Mrs. G. A. Daeke, who were present for Tues day's session, Mrs. Earl Stegall, present for the Tues Mrs. Delbridge Is Circle Chairman Mrs. W. A. Delbridge was elected chairman of Circle No. 1 of the Woman's Society of Christian service at its May meeting, held at the home of Mrs. G. O. Ivey. Other officers elected were Mrs. Nellie Register, vice chairman; Mrs. Emily Hawks, secretary and Mrs. Irma Hawks, treasurer. Mrs. W. A. Delbridge pre sided over the meeting. She announced that Mrs. Sam Dunn of Enfield, conference WSCS president, would be present as guest speaker at the gen eral meeting at the church on May 29. Mrs. Nellie Register pre sented an interesting pro gram, "The Christian and Culture." The program was given in the form of a dia logue by Mrs. Ruby Johnson and Mrs. Delbridge. During the social hour, Mrs. Ivey served ice cream, cookies and a fruit drink. Mrs. R. F. Brickhouse will entertain the circle in June when Mrs. Emily Hawks will have charge of the program. General Meet Held At Methodist Church The general meeting of the Woman's Missionary Society was held at the Norlina Meth odist Church on Monday night with 18 members present. Mrs. G. O. Stultz, Jr., pres ident, opened the meeting with a devotional and the call to prayer. The missionary program was under the direction of the Annie Armstrong Circle with Mrs. W. M. Felts as program chairman. The subject dis cussed was "Establishing Churches and Sustaining Fellowships in Hong Kong." Others taking part were Mes dames Leon Pridgen, Sara Parham, J. F. Bobbitt, I. M. Weaver and Lottie Nance. Mrs. A. S. Wyckoff dismiss ed the group with prayer. Miss Dinah Clarke Honored At Shower Miss Dinah Clarke, bride elect of June 25, was honored last Friday evening at a mis cellaneous shower given by Misses Sandra Turner, Judy Gray, Judy Stallings, Judy Coates and Bonnie Simmons in the parlor of North Spencer Dormitory of UNC - G, Greensboro. Among the guests was Mrs. John J. Clarke, mother of the bride-elect. Bryan, Jr., of Hendersc announce the engagement of their daughter, Melanie Hilman, to Harold Walter Haun, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Haun of Kittrell. Mr. Haun is the grandson of Mrs. George Bender of Route 2, Norlina. A June 10 wedding is planned. Circle 2 Meets At Home Mrs. Norvell Mrs. Harry Norvell was hostess to members of Circle No. 2 of the WSCS of the Norlina Methodist Church at her home on Monday night. Mrs. Graham Grissom pre sented an interesting pro gram on "Biblical Women." The program was concluded with a reading from Pro verbs, "A Tribute to Mother hood," by Mrs. George Read. The hostess served de licious refreshments to the 12 members present. Mrs. Wallace Newman will entertain the circle at the June meeting. Zion Group Meets At Home Mrs. White The Zion Woman's Society of Christian Service held its regular monthly meeting on Monday evening at the home of Mrs. W. M. White with Mrs. C. P. Rooker presiding and 14 attending. Mrs. Jake Norwood gave the devotional and the Rev. M. W. Dulin presented the program, "Food for the Journey." Mrs. R. M. Rooker will en tertain the society in June. KILLED IN ACCIDENT Mrs. B. C. Thompson re ceived a message Tuesday that her sister-in-law, Mrs. Aurora Braxton Jordan of Hillsboro, was killed in an automobile accident Monday near Cedar Grove. Mrs. Thompson and Mrs. W, G. Coleman of Warrenton at tended the funeral at Walnut Grove Methodist Church in Hillsboro on Wednesday. PERRY Mrs. White Hostess To Her Bridge Club Mrs. Minnie Lou White de lightfully entertained her bridge club at her home in Drewry on last Thursday night. Guest players were Mrs. Irving Hayes and Mrs. Henry White. The high score prize was presented to Mrs. John Clarke and the second high score prize was presented to Mrs. Edna Newman. Mrs. E. M. Robinson won the bingo orize. After an evening of enjoy able play, the hostess served wine Jello, topped with boiled custard, cookies and coffee. Methodist Men Meet At Church The Norlina Methodist Men's Club held its regular monthly dinner meeting on Thursday night of last week in the fellowship hall of the church. King Named ToSUNC Leadership Fraternity A graduate of Norllna High School?Ronnie P. King,?has been elected to the "Order of 30 and 3" at North Caro lina State University. He Is one of 11 student leaders elected to membership by the Univer sity's sophomore level leadership fraternity, named for Its total of 33 members, 11 of whom are elected each year. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerston D. King of Rt. 1, Warrrenton.King Is majoring In agricultural economics at North Carolina State Univer sity. An active young leader, he has served as vice pres ident of the FFA, assistant editor of the agricultural economics publication for students, and a member of the Alpha Zeta agricultural so ciety. The program consisted of an informative talk by the pastor, the Rev. Bruce Pate, who spoke on "The Functions of the Methodist Church. The emblem of the medical profession is known as the caduceus. Riritan Club Sets Novie On Tobacco The Norllna Ruritan Club met Tuesday at the Norllna Club House. Clayton Taylor had charge of the program and presented a movie on "Modern Growing and Pro cessing of Tobacco." The business session was presided over by the presi dent, Ollle Knight. Leigh Traylor reported that the land is now available for a swim ming pool in Norlina. The Recreation Committee reported that new wire had been put on the tennis courts. A motion was made and plans made to have a Bake Sale on Saturday, May 13 at Knight's Appliance Store. L. B. Hardage gave a re port on the Stock Show and Sale held and suggested that the Ruritans plan to help next year. Rex Gordon, chairman of the Educational Committee, reported on the plans for the High School for the coming year. The measles vaccine is bas ed on work of John F. Enders, who isolated the measles virus. Perkinson Is Named Bowl Representative Hiram Perkinson, III, was recently elected by his national social fraternity, Sig ma Phi Epsllon, to represent it In the Atlantic Christian College Bowl.
