Warrenton Native
Receives Award
Dr. William H. Wesson, Jr.,
was one of three University of"
South Carolina professors to
receive the Russell Awards at
the June graduation exercises.
These awards were estab
lished by U. S. District
Judge Donald Russell, form
erly president of the Univer
sity of South Carolina and past
governor of the state.
Dr. Wesson, whose award
was for distinguished teach
ing, joined the USC faculty in
1960 as professor in eco
nomics, and is author of sev
eral studies in economics. The
son of Mrs. W. H. Wesson
and the late Mr. Wesson, he Is
a native of Warrenton and
a graduate of John Graham
High School.

acy, Mrs. Henry F. Twitty
announced yesterday.
Mike, the 12-year-old
grandson of Mr. and Mrs. J.
A. Ross of Rt. 1, Macon,
was in Mrs. Grady Haynes'
home room when his art work
was submitted in the contest.
He has received a check for
$10 from the State UDC trea
surer.

nett, who accepted a call as
pastor of the Warren Plains
Baptist Church on April 15,
has moved into the pastorium
at Warren Plains.
Mr. Burnett, a 1951 grad
uate of Wimauma (Florida)
High School, spent four years
in the U. S. Air Force. Fol
lowing his service he attended
Manatee Junior College in
Brackenton, Fla., and Roanoke
College at Salem, Va. He and
his wife did Southern Baptist
work at Anchorage, Alaska,
and at Butte Baptist Church
in Palmer, Alaska, his last
pastorate. This fall he will
start his second year at South
eastern Seminary in Wake
Forest.
He is married to the form
er Billie Poor of Helena, Mon
tana. They have two sons,
Jimmie 9, and Tony 6. His

Rites For Littleton
Teacher Held Here
Funeral services for Mrs.
Helen Gardner Bell, widow of
James T. Bell of Littleton,
were conducted Monday at 3
p. m. at the Warrenton Bap
tist rhurrh bv the Rev. Erble
Mangum and the Rev. John R.
Link. Burial was in Fairview
Cemetery.
Mrs. Bell, 71, a retired
teacher, died Saturday at War
ren General Hospital. She suf
fered a stroke on March 27,
and since that time had been
at a nursing home and the
Roanoke Rapids Hospital from
where she was transferred to
Warren General Hospital.
The daughter of the late
Franklin P. Gardner and Dora
Rodwell Gardner, Mrs. Bell
was born at Churchill but
as a small child moved with
her parents to High Point.
Upon the deatli of her parents
she moved to Warrenton in
1913 and attended Warrenton
High School, later graduating
from what was then East Car
olina Teachers College.
For many years Mrs. Bell
taught in schools of Warren
County and for the past fif
teen years or more had been
a teacher at Littleton High
School. She retired at the end
of the 19G5-6G school year but
was called back into service
last fall due to a teacher short
age and taught until February
of this year.
For a brief period following
her marriage, she did. not
teach, but re-entered the class
room upon the death of
Mr. Bell in 1903.
She is survived by two sis
ters, Mrs. Allen C. Aldridge
of Kinston and Miss Mamie
Gardner of Warrenton; and by
one brother, Walter M. Gard
ner of Warrenton.
Edwards Funeral
Held On Sunday
Funeral services for James
Lewis Edwards, 40, who died
on June 5, were conducted Sun
day at the Manson Baptist
Church, with burial in the
church cemetery.
Surviving are his mother,
Mrs. Amelia Edwards of War
renton; one brother, Windell
Edwards, of Warrenton; four
sisters, Iola of Warrenton,
May and Matilda Edwards of
New York and Mrs. Everlyn
Edwards Jordan of Manson.
