Woman's Day Observed At Church Woman's Day was observed at the Warrenton Baptist Church on Bragg Street on 3unday morning at 11 o'clock with Mrs. H el end a Harris of Littleton, a Halifax County educator, as the guest speaker. Mrs. Mary Hodges presided over the ser vice. Presented by Miss Lucy Wat Wins, Mrs. Harris spoke of the treat part the women have In the world of today. She said that to fulfill her role of today a woman needs wisdom, know ledge, understanding and, most of all, attitude. Mrs. V. C. Henderson Is chairman of the program com mittee. Other members are Mrs. Eleanor Ellis, Miss Lucy Wortham, and Mrs. Mary Hodges. Mrs. Bessie D. Jones Is president. Profs "Miss Cordon, will you give us the formulafor water?" Miss Gordon: "H-I-J-K L-M-N-O." Prof: "Ridiculous! Whoever told you that?" Miss Gordon: "you did, sir. EDDIE ELSWORTH ALSTON Miss Spruill Becomes Bride Of Mr. Alston Miss Gloria JernltaSprulUof Warrenton and Mr. Eddie Els worth Alston of Warrenton were married Saturday afternoon In a 3:30 ceremony at the Greater Lovely Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. M. R. Hedgepeth. The bride Is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry H. Sprulll and the groom's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Eddie J. Alston of Warrenton. The bride wore a formal em pire gown of peau de sole with bodice of silk eyelet lace with scalloped bell sleeves and cathedral train. Her veil was attached to a wreath of pearls and she carried a white orchid on a white prayer book, with white streamers tied with stephanotls. Miss Sandra Sprulll, sister of the bride, was maid of honor. 3rldesmaids were Miss Bon ile SprutU, sister of the bride, Miss Ruth Davis, niece of the jroom, and Miss Mildred Als :on of Washington, D. C. Bobby Alston was his broth er's best man. Ushers were - Glen Davis, Clinton Alston and Darnell Powell, all of Warren ton. Following the wedding a re ception was held at Club Al hambra on West Frankllnton Street In Warrenton. The bride Is a graduate of John R. Hawkins High School and was formerly employed by the Morgan Guaranty Trust Com pany of New York City. The groom Is a graduate of John R, Hawkins High School and Is employed by the Glass Plant In Henderson. Garden Club Meets At Hawkins Home The Town N' Country Gar den Club held Its monthly meet ing at the home of Mrs. O. H. Hawkins with Mrs. McCarroll Alston, President, presiding. Plans for participation In the town of Warrenton clean-up campaign were made. Mrs. L. B. Henderson and Mrs. Wilford Exum stressed the club litter bug campaign in connection with the town campaign. Mrs. G. M. Brown announced that club church Sunday will be held on May 5, at the All Saints Episcopal Church. Beautiful arrangements of spring flowers were displayed for the mantle, coffee table, and dining room table. Con tainers of pastel shades brought out the beauty of the spring flowers. Mrs. Hawkins gave a dem onstration on "Usingfertilizers to make Artificial Manure". She stated that green plants that de compose quickly are preferred and placed In the compost pile which should be built about 12 Inches In height. If the mater ial is dry it should be sprink led thoroughly with water and trampled to pack well; add a lay er of soil, followed by layers of fertilizer and limestone. To each ten square feet of pile use approximately one pound of ground limestone and 1 1/2 lbs. of nitrogen fertilizer. A mixed fertilizer such as 16-16 8 can be substituted for the separate fertilizer material. Add alternate layers of com post material until the pile is from 4 to 5 ft. high. This can be accomplished if the sides are kept vertical and the top saucer shaped, the pile should be turned once or twice during the season to hasten decomposition. The club adjourned to meet with Mrs. L. B. Henderson for its May meeting. Cheek Funeral Is Held On Thursday Funeral services for James Stokes Cheek, 62, were con ducted on last Thursday at 4 p. m. at the Union Grove Bap tist Church by the Rev. Milton A. Galamlson, his pastor from Brooklyn, N. Y. Burial was in the Hecks Grove cemetery with military rites conducted by a group from Fort Bragg. Mr. Cheek, the son of the late Rev. N. A. Cheek and Mrs. Annie Cheek, died at 7 a. m. on Tuesday of last week in the Veterans Administration hos pital In Durham. He was an eld er In the Slloan Presbyter ian Church in Brooklyn, N. Y., and a veteran of World War n. He was In Warren County visiting relatives over the Eas ter holidays when he was taken ill. During the past 42 years he lived In Hampton, Va., but most of his time was spent in Brooklyn, N. Y. Survivors Include three sis ters, Mrs. Matilda Russell and Miss Annie L. Cheek, both of Warren County, and Mrs. Marie Johnson of Philadelphia, Pa.: five brothers, B. N. Cheek, the Rev. O. E. Cheek and W. H. Cheek, all at the home com munity of Warren County, Clyde Cheek of Philadelphia, Pa., and N. A. Cheek of Durham.
