CRECH ON COl'RT SQUARE ERECTED BV JUNIOR WOMAN'S CLUB Santa To Be Present Christmas Sing To Be Held On Courthouse Square Tonight; Jr. Woman's Club Sponsor The Warrenton Christmas Sing, sponsored by the Warren ton Junior Woman's Club, will be held on the courthouse square tonight (Thursday) and everyone is invited to come and sing, Mrs. Sam Webster, publicity chairman, said yesterday. In case of inclement weather the Sing will be held at Thomp son's Warehouse beside the A&P Store. "Here is an opportunity to Join together to sing the 'Old Familar' Christmas carols and Christmas songs, Mrs. Webs ter said. Santa Claus will come to the Sing on a fire truck and will treat the children with candy. There will be "hot" coffee or "hot" chocolate for everyone to enjoy. Mrs. Webster said that in addition to singing, there will be a live nativity scene on the rourthouse stflrawtanlght. Mr. and Mrs. Claiborne B. Aycock and their two sons, Ben and Mike, will be Joseph and Mary and two shepherds, respective ly. John Blalock will be a third shepherd. April Andrews, Jennie Hunter and Jennifer Harris will be angels. Jack Harris, Bill Connell and Charles Renn will be Wise Men, who will also sing during the Sing. Robert Macon Davis will lead the group in singing and Mrs, G. W. King will be accompanist at the piano. Leonard Daniel will sing "Oh, Come, Emman uel." Misses Laura Bennie Davis and Nancy Williams will sing "Silent Night," and Misses Janet Gardner and Jennifer Christmas Program To Be Held At S. Springs A Christmas program, "The Spirit of Christmas," will be presented Sunday night at Sul phur Springs Baptist Church at Elberon, beginning at 6 o'clock, the Rev. Henry Johnson, pas tor, announced yesterday. The program will consist of three parts. Part I will depict a secular Christmas in which children hang their stockings, decorate a tree, and exchange gifts. Part n will consist of the singing of Christmas Carols by the congregation A sacred Christmas is the theme of Part IJI in which there will be nativity scenes of the manger, shepherds and the magi. The Christmas Story as recorded in Matthew and Luke, will be read. Mrs. C. H. Stegall will be the narrator. The ser vice will conclude with the sing ing of "O Come, All Ye Faith ful." Special Christmas music will be provided on the organ by Jerry Ayscue and Noel Rob ertson. Mr. Johnson said the public is cordially Invited to share In this worship experience at Christmas. Ml Saints To Have Christmas Eve Service Members of All Saints Epis copal Church congregation will have their Christmas Eve ser vice of Holy Communion at 8 o'clock. The Rev. Robert W. Orvis, priest In charge, will be the celebrant and bring the Christmas message. Familiar Christmas carols will be enjoyed. Mrs. Robert E. Ransom is director of music and the church organist. Dr. Thomas W. Haywood, lay read er, will assist the rector in the service. Acolytes will be Loenard Cooper, jr., Frank Bollock, Michael Basket and McKeever Basket. Pentecostal Church To Have Annual Pageant The Warrenton Pentecostal Holiness Church will have its annual Christmas pageant Fri day night, Dec. 20, at 8o'clock. Recitation will be given by Tasker Fleming, Elda Ayscue, Jackie Whittemore, Darlene Fleming, Ginger Ward, and Cathy Harp. Characters for the pageant, "The Journey's End," will be: Achan, the Innkeeper, J. T. Fleming; Drucilla, his wife, Betty Fleming; Ruth, their daughter, Annette Rivers; Traveler, Charles Whittemore; Mary and Joseph, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Spence. Shepherds ? Caleb, Larry Ward; Demas, Stanley Neal; Lemuel, Joe Falkner; Joel, David Spence. Wlsemen ? Balthasar, Tony Ward; Gaspar, Larry Rivers; Melchlor, Davis Hilliard. Angel - Linda Harp. Lions To Have Annual Christmas Party Friday The Warrenton Lions Club will hold Its annual Christmas party at the Lions Den on Friday night, Dec. 20, when young children and members of the cJub will receive gifts and visit with Santa Claus. Announcement of the date for the party was made at the regu lar meeting of the club in the Hons Den on Friday night. Highlighting the meeting was the announcement that Walter Hurst, young son of Lion and Lioness Fred Hurst, had donat ed his piano to the Lions Club for use in the Lion's Den. This contribution by young Hurst, a member reported, was more appreciated by those pre sent as Lioness Nellie Gardner accompanied group singing led by Lion Monroe Gardner. W. R, Drake, chairman of the program committee, present ed Lion Ted Wilson who gave an Interesting reading on Peter Marshall's "The Meaning of Christmas." Tom Watson gave a report on the White Cane drive. President Allen Tucker pre sided over the meeting. Grace was said by Lion Will Fowler. Dorman Blayiock was Lion X and Dr. Bunch received the dollar. Present for the meetingwere Dawson Alston, guest of Dor man Blayiock, and Elmer Wells, guest of Lion Hy Diamond. Cantata At Hacon A Christmas Cantata, The Carol of Christmas, will be giv en at the Macon Baptist Church on Sunday, Dec. 22, at 5:30 p. m. Santa Claus will appear after the program. SERVICE AT RIDGEWAY Christmas services will be held at the Church of the Good Shepherd at Rldgeway on Sunday morning, Dec. 22, at 9 o'clock by the Rector, the Rev. Robert Orvis. Holy Commun ion will be celebrated. Episcopalians To Have Christmas Eve Service The Christmas Eve choral Holy Communion service at Emmanuel Episcopal Church will begin at 11 o'clock next Tuesday evening, the Rev. Rob ert W, Orvls, rector, announc ed yesterday. Music of familiar carols and special Christmas numbers will be song by the choir and the congregation with Mrs. Leonard s. Daniel at the organ. The Holy Communion service will be from the 1028 Liturgy, following the trial period of * "proposed liturgy" which con cludes with Sunday morning, Dec. 22. All services from Dec. 24 will be from the 1928 Prayer Book, Mr.' Orvls Assisting the rector on ?t mas Eva will be two lay I, Arthur J. Williams and A. C. Fair. Acolytes will be Kearny Davis, Frank holt, Barry Shields, Alfred Williams, and Jay Williams. James Y. Kerr will be in charge of the ushers. Holy Communion will be cele brated at 10:30 o'clock Christ mas morning, Wednesday, Dec. 25. Mr. Orvls said that parlshon ers and friends at Emmanuel will gather at the church this coming Sunday evening at 7:80 o'clock to decorate the nave, chancel and sanctuary. Members at the Em manuel and Saint Mary's Chap ters of the Episcopal Church women will furnish refresh ments following the DD Cases Tried In Dist. Court Five cases of drunk driving were tried in district court here last Friday with Judge Claude Allen of Oxford presid ing. Joe Louis Hunt was ordered to pay a $100 fine and court costs when he was found guilty of drunk driving. Boyd Allen Boone pled guilty to a charge of drunk driving and was ordered to pay a $100 fine and court costs. Doris Norman Richardson was sentenced to the roads for six months when he was found guilty of a charge of d. 'nk driving. The sentence was suspended provided the de fendant pays a $100 fine and court costs and surrenders his driver's license. Plummer Debnam, Jr., charged with drunk driving and carrying a concealed weapon, entered a plea of reckless driv ing and was ordered to pay a $100 fine and court costs. Deb nam entered a plea of nolo contendere in the concealed judgment charge. Prayer for judgment was continued. John Pulaska Southall, Jr., was sentenced to the roads for six months when he was found guilty of drunk driving. The sen tence was suspended provided the defendant pays a $125 fine and court costs and surren ders his license. The defend ant gave notice of appeal and appeal bond was set at $200. Herbert Lee Jones was sen tenced to the roads for 30 days when he was found guilty of public drunkenness. The sen tence was suspended provided the defendant pays a $10 fine and court costs and not violate any of the ordinances of the City of Warrenton for one year and not be found guilty of pub lic drunkenness for one year. Joseph Jones was charged with public drunkenness and possession of wine. The soli citor was given permission to amend the warrant to show sec ond offense of public drunken ness within 12 months. The court ordered that Jones be committed to the custody of the Commissioner of Corrections for not less than 30 days and not more than six months, cus tody sentence suspended upon condition the defendant pay a fine of $5.00 and court costs, and not be found guilty of public drunkenness for twelvemonths. James Alsont was ordered to pay a $25 fine and court costs when he was found guilty (See COURT, page 3) Christmas Program At Warren Plains The Youth of the Warren Plains Baptist Church will pre sent a Christmas play, "No Room In The Inn," tonight (Thursday) at 7:30 o'clock. The carol and cherub choirs will provide music. A candle light dedication service will conclude the play. A fellowship hour will fol low. All members and the pub lic are cordially invited to be present. TASKER POLK HERE Tasker Polk, who has been studying piano in Basel, Switz erland, for the past five years, arrived at Warrenton last Thursday to spend the holidays. He will give a concert in Atlanta, Ga., before return ing to Switzerland around the first of January. This was the first time Mr. Polk has been home since the death of his fa ther, James Knox Polk, two and a half years ago. Lost Hunter Is Found After A Big Manhunt WALTER GREEN Draft Board Will Be Closed For Holiday The Warren County Draft Board here will be closed from Dec. 23 to Dec. 30, while the Executive Secretary, Mrs. Thomas Ellington, Is on leave, Fred Hurst, secretary, an nounced Monday. Hurst asks that boys whose birthday falls on the days when the office will be closed to re port for registration on De cember 30. Warren Schools To Close Oil Friday Warren County schools will close for the Christmas holi days on Friday, Dec. 20, and will reopen on Dec. 30. New Year's Day will be observed as a holiday. lions To Sponsor Decoration Contest Judging in the Warrenton Lions Club's annual Christmas Decoration Contest will be made just prior to Christmas, probably on Christmas Eve night, according to Bud Ende cott, chairman of this commit tee. A first and second prize will be given to the winners for the best outside Christmas decora tion, and for the best inside de corations as seen from the out side, Endecott said. SOLOIST Josie Peoples, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Whit Peoples of Warrenton, was a soloist when the St. Mary's junior Col lege Glee Club presented its annual concert at 8 p. m. Tues day in the college auditorium in Raleigh. MRS. JOHN K. K1LIAN Mrs. John Kilian Named Club Woman Of Year Mrs. John K. Kill an of Nor lina was named Clubwoman of the Year for 1969-1-970 by the Norlina Junior Woman'sClubat their annual Christmas party Saturday night. Within Two Miles Of His Home An elderly Negro man, who failed to return home from a hunting trip Friday night, was found on his way home early Saturday morning by Sheriff Clarence Davis who had direct ed a large man hunt the pre vious night. When Walter Green, 67, who left home on a hunting trip around 3 p. m. Friday, failed to return home around two hours after dark, a mammoth man hunt was started under the di rection of Warren County Sheriff Clarence Davis. Joining in the hunt were mem bers of the Warren County Res cue Squad, the Warrenton Rural Fire Department, the Warren ton Junior Chamber of Com merce, members of the Sheriff's Department and other volunteers. Scheduled to join in the hunt Saturday morningwere 30 members of the Warren County National Guard. Many members of the Warrenton Rural Fire Department were called away from a basketball game at the John Graham High School gym. A search was made in the woods around Green's home in the Carrolltown section of the county until around midnight when it was abandoned until the next morning. Members of the family and others kept up the search until around 3 a. m. Saturday. Early Saturday morning Sheriff Davis went to the Green home and found that Green had not returned. He went to the Armory where local guardsmen were to hold drill and secured the help of the guardsmen in the search. On his return from the Armory to the Green home Sheriff Davis saw a man coming out of the woods near the bridge on the old "Buck Spring" road that leads from Route 158 at the Hal Connell farm to Carrolltown. Sheriff Davis stopped to pick up the man, who was Walter Green. Sheriff Davis saidGreenask ed him where he was. Davis said that while Green was wet from the rain that started at 5 a. m. that he was apparently none the worse from his ordeal. Green told Sheriff Davis that he had walked all night. Sheriff Davis said Monday that Green was never more than two miles from his home, but the woods were so thick that members of the searching party became lost from time to time. Tuesday morning when a cameraman went to Green's home for a photograph, he found Green in good condition. Green said that he was sorry for all the trouble he had caused and wished to express his deep ap preciation for the efforts of both white and colored citizens. Sheriff Davis said that from 50 to 75 persons Joined in the hunt. Kimball Returns Capt. Allen Kimball, Jr., with Army intelligence in Viet Nam for a year, recently returned to Warrenton to spend a leave with his family. He was sta tioned at Fort Meade, Md., before leaving for Vietnam. Capt. Kimball, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Kimball of Man son, will leave the latter part of the month for Port Meade, Md., where be will study ad vanced military lntelltgancefor nine months. Mrs. Kimball, the former jennette Bolton of Wise, and their two children, Altai, IH, 5, and Gregory 2, have been liv ing in the McGulre hone on Rldgeway Street while Capt. Kimball was in Vietnam.
