KERR PRESENTS PLAQUE TO GENERAL BOWERS Presented Service Award General Bowers Honored ByWarrenton Rotary Club Major General Claude T. Bowers, Adjutant General of North Carolina, was pre sented a 50-Year Distin guished Service Award by the Warrenton Rotary Club at special exercises held ai the Warren Plaza Inn last Friday night in recognition of his ser vices to his town, country, state and nation. General Bowershas been a citizen of Warrenton for more than 50 years. Also sharing in the honors and being recognized by the club was General Bowers wife, Mrs. Hattle Connell Bowers, who was presented an engraved silver tray by Bill Delbrldge, presi dent, on behalf of the Rotary Club. Prior to the three-course dinner served in the private din ing room of the inn, a social hour, under the direction of Captain and Mrs. George Bur well, was enjoyed by General and Mrs. Bowers and friends. President Bill Delbrldge pre sided over the meeting and served as toastmaster. The in vocation was pronounced by the Rev. Robert W. Or vis, rector of Emmanuel Episcopal Church and a member of the Rotary Club. The Distinguished Service Award was presented to Gen eral Bowers by Jim Kerr, who spoke of his years of associa tion with General Bowers, re counted some of his accomp lishments to his town, county, state and nation* and praised his character. Engraved on the plaque were the words: "Dis tinguished Service Award pre sented to Major General Claude T. Bowers for outstanding ser vice to his community, state and nation, presented by Warrenton Rotary Club 1969." The plaque also bore four stars, the em blem of a Major General. General Bowers responded In a few brief remarks In which he thanked the Rotarians for the honor, paid tribute to his wife for the part she has played In what success he has en joyed, and expressed his deep appreciation for the friendships he has enjoyed and the assist ance he has received from many friends. Testimonials from distin guished citizens of the state and long time friends of General Bowers were read by individual members of the Warrenton Ro tary Club and were placed In a bound book which was presented to the general. In reading the testimonials, Jim Beatty Speaker Mrs. W. L. Wood Elected President Woman's Club Mrs. W. L. Wood was elect ed president of the Warrenton Woman's Club at the January meeting of the club held last Thursday night at the Warren Plaza Inn. Other officers elected were Mrs. Charles Bunch, first vice president; Mrs. F, P. Whit ley, second vice president; Mrs. Manley Martin, recordlngsec retary; Mrs. Leonard Daniel, corresponding secretary and publicity chairman; Mrs. B. G. White, treasurer; Mr*. T. w. General Assembly from Mecklenburg County, was the W speaker. Mr. Beatty, who airman of the Easter Seal Morth Carolina, spoke briefly on his position as chair man am of the great Import County Easter Seal chairman passed batches of envelopes to each member of the club to be completed by the February meeting. Mr. Beatty complimented the Warrenton Woman's Club on the fine work It has done as spon sor of the Easter Seal Drive in past years. The film, "Sound the Trumpets," which deals with specifications of buildings and building codes for the handi capped citizens of the stato. was shown. He then read a letter commending General Bowers from Major General James F. Cantwell, president National Guard Association of the United States. Shear in was crushed around 1 o'clock Wed nesday morning when struck by the falling top of a tree blown down in the strong wind of Tues day night. Henderson Paid Entire Cost Of Water Lines The Town of Henderson paid the entire cost of running a 14-inch water main to the Lauren Glass Works, south of Henderson on Route 1, a number of years ago, R. w. Buck, Hen derson City Manager, told a representative of this newspa per last Thursday. This information was sought in view of efforts here to extend a water line and build a 300,000 gallon tank at the Warrenton Industrial Park. When a second line was later needed to furnish water to the glass factory, the town of Henderson and the County of Vance shared the coat of the llna under a new policy adopt ed by the VKtee County Board of Commlssiooera. Buck said that the Town of Vance County, Buck said, Is for the county to pay the en tire cost of running water lines from the city limits to any industrial site where the coun ty can recoup Its costs through taxes In a 10-year period. Granville County has adopted ? similar policy to that of Vance County, JOhn K. Helms, execu tive director of Granville-Ox ford Planning Commission, said on Thursday. He said that Granville had a rule of thumb that tt would advance funds for extension at lines from a city to an Industrial site whenever tt was Indicated that tt could recoup its losses through taxes within a five year period. Junior Club Offers Books To Hospital The education department of the Warrenton Junior Woman's Club, In cooperation with the Warrenton Public Library, Is offering library service to the patients in Warren General Hospital, Mrs. Coley Pprkin aon, publicity chairman for the club, announced yesterday. Mrs. Perkinson said a mem ber of the education depart ment will go to the hospitpl every Monday with a select group of books which the pat ients may check out and read until the following Monday. She. said the department also hopes to offer reading services to the patients in the near future. Mrs. Vernon Steed is chair man of the education depart ment. Mrs. Perkinson said that the Warrenton Junior Woman's Club would like to thank Mrs. Leonard Daniel, librarian, for her cooperation In this club pro ject. Two Defendants Appeal Cases Two defendants appealed their cases to Superior Court when they were found guilty in Warren County District Court last Friday. Both cases were for alleged violation of the mo tor vehicle laws. Elijah Shearln was sentenced to the roads for 60 days when he was found guilty of a second offense of drunk driving. The sentence was suspended for three years on condition the defendant surrender his driv er's license to the Clerk of Court and not drive a motor vehicle upon the public high ways of the state for 12 months, that he not be found guilty of drunk driving for three years CUB SCOUTS TO MEET Cub Scout Pack 671 will meet January 27 at 7:30 o'clock at the basement of the Wesley Memor ial Church. A skit, "Knights of Yore" will be presented. and pay a fine of $300 and court costs. $100 was ordered remit ted. Shearin appealed his case to Superior Court and ap pearance bond was set at $150. Jerry Rogers Parrlsh was found guilty of reckless driving and ordered to pay a $25 fine and court costs. Parrish ap pealed to Superior Court and was released on his own recog nizance. Jimmy R. Coley, charged with having no operator's license, was found not guilty. Lee Frazier Carroll, charged with Improper passing, was found not guilty. Robert Johnson pled guilty to a charge of trespassing and was ordered to pay court costs. Raymond Fuller, charged with disorderly conduct, enter ed a plea of nolo contendere. Prayer for judgment was con tinued upon payment of costs. James Augusta Hunt, charg ed with speeding and transport ing taxpald whiskey with seal broken, entered a plea of nolo contendere. He was found guil ty of transporting seal-broken whiskey and ordered to pay a $10 found not guilty on the speed ing charge. Byron Calvin Brown, Jr., en tered a plea of nolo contendere to a charge of speedlng76 miles per hour In a60mph zone. Pray er for Judgment was con tinued upon payment of costs. Harvey Allen Alston pled guilty to a charge of drunk driving and was ordered to sur render his operator's license to the Clerk of Court, not operate a motor vehicle upon the public highways of the state for 12 months and to pay a $100 fine and court costs. Linda Lavem Alston was found guilty of failing to see that movement could be made in safety. Prayer for judgment was continued upon payment of costs. A motion for non-suit allowed in the case of Roosevelt M. Jordan, charged with carrying a concealed weapon. Charles Jerry Jones of Fair banks, Alaska, was ordered to pay court costs when he pled guilty to a charge of speeding (See COURT, page 2) Lyons Accepts Call As Minister Norlina Church The Rev. Jerry Dallas Lyons, 33, of Ellzabethton, Tenn., has accepted a call as minister of the Norlina Baptist Church. He succeeds the Rev. W. C. Baughman, Jr., who accepted a call to a Florida church in No vember. Mr. Lyons, a student at South eastern Seminary at Wake For est, held his first service as pastor of the Norlina Church on Sunday. A native of Carter Tennessee, h* was The North Carolina State Board of Health Mobile X-ray Unit will be at the Warren County Health Center for foui days, beginning Monday, Jan. 26, Mrs. Clyde Whitford, exe cutive secretary of the Warren County TB and Health Associa tion, announced yesterday. The unit will be in opera tion on Monday from 1 p. m. until 1 p. m. Friday. The hours of operation Tuesday, Wednes day and Thursday will be from 9 a. m. until 12 noon and from 1 p. m. until 4 p. m. Mrs. Whitford said the X-ray clinics on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday will be, by appoint ment only, for people with chest diseases, arrested TB patients, positive tuberculin reactors, health cards and doctor refer rals. On Thursday and until 1 p. m. Friday the unit will be open to the public. Mrs. Whitford urges the public to take care of this free x-ray ser vice. The x-ray clinic is sponsored by the North Carolina State Board of Health, the Warren County Health Department and the Warren County Tubercu losis and Health Association. Many Attend Open House At School Interest in the educational program of Warren County was exemplified in the turnout of people attending the Open House at Marlam Boyd School Sunday. Principal L. B. Henderson esti mated that approximately 500 people from Warren and Vance Counties and other areas tour ed the school plant between three and five o'clock in the afternoon. Members of the County Board of Education and Superintendent J. R. Peeler were on hand with staff members of Marlam Boyd to greet visitors. Students from the sixth grade serving ax guides were: Wanda Green, Mi chael Tyson, Cindy Dillard, De loris Jones, Brenda Wil liams, Dlanne Brooks, Louise Llmer, Lisa Fleming, Joanne Clayton, Kathy Myrlck, Ronald Rivers, Mike Massengill, David Lancaster, George King, An nette Townes, DeLon Riggan, Bert a Lou Ay cock, and Ethel Hawkins. Several other students served as hosts in their class rooms. Guests were served refresh ments of fruit punch, cake squares, cheese straws, and nuts In the cafeteria.
