Trio To Give Concert In County Sunday
A concert trio featuring Miss
Evangeline Grant, Gary Grant
and George Jones will be fea
tured at the Macon Second Bap
tist Church on Sunday, March
8, at 5 p. m., the Rev. Jere
miah Webb, minister of the
church, announced yesterday.
The trio are graduates of
Brawley High School at Scotland
Neck. Miss Grant has continued
her education and is majoring
in Sociology at ?orth Carolina
Central University, Durham.
Grant, who is the concert nar
rator, studied Dramatics at
North Carolina Central Uni
versity, and was the first
Black actor to play at the
Utah Shakespearean Festival at
Cedar City, Utah. Jones who is
organist for the group, studied
music at St. Phillips College
School of Music in San An
tonio, Texas.
This trio was formed, Mr.
Webb said, mainly because of
their burning desire to regener
ate this historically creative
expression of Black Americans,
and to reveal more of the latent
beauty and great significance
attached to this form of deep
worshipful art which exalts the
hearts of millions. The Spirit
uals, America's heritage from
Black Americans, Mr. Webb
added, seem to some degree to
be a neglected field of art.
Mr. Webb said the public
is cordially invited to come,
share, appraise and enjny thpsp
young artists.

On Friday afternoon, Feb.
27, the students acted as fire
men to extinguish a brush fire
on the side of the school. With
remarkable cooperation on the
part of the seventh and eighth
grades and several bus drivers,
the fire was soon under control.
Warren Academy, Inc., has
been officially approved by the
North Carolina State Depart
ment of Education, Division of
Non-Public Schools. We are now
a state approved school!
Both the third and fourth
grades took part in entertaining
their parents at the Warren
Academy P.T. O. meeting Mon
day, February 23. The classes
sang songs from some of their
favorite movies and I must say,
sang them beautifully. Also,
Mrs. Fleming's class won the
room count prize of $2.00 at the
P.T.O, meeting.
Mrs. Fleming's third grad
ers have been busy making
weather booklets to aid them in
their studies. In art the stu
dents have l>een learning
how important a part, color,
harmony, and balance play in
making their pictures more at
tractive.
The fourth graders have been
busy making health projects.
Mrs. Ptarc? has been teaching
her students Um dtftarent parts
of the human body a#ta how they
(unction.
Mrs. Brown's filth grade Is
making miniature floats for
their "Parade of States." They
are studying the United States
and are "traveling" all over it
with the help of their books.
The class Is also selling boxes
of candy to earn enough money
to spend a day in Williamsburg,
Va.
Mrs. King's sixth grade is
decorating their room to show
the different things they are
studying. In addition to some
timelines, there is an attrac
tive display of items from
France. The students have also
been "doing their thing" in
modern art.
The seventh grade has been
dissecting frogs and a fish.
Mrs. Jones has let the students
teach each other the science
chapter. The theme of the chap
ter is "Living Things and
their Environments are inter
dependent."
In science, Mrs. Cheves
eighth graders are planning to
get together this Saturday to
watch the solar eclipse. This
way, the students can discuss
the eclipse better than if only
a few saw it.
This weekend, the seventh
and eighth graders are going to
sell Krispy Kreme doughnuts
to finance a trip to Williams
burg. They sell for 65? per
box. If you would like to buy
some doughnuts, please con
tact one of the students.
