Irrigation Makes Big Difference In Agricultural Research Project "You know there's something wrong when at the end of June the tobacco is taller than the corn," sal a Hester Vernon, Ca rolina Power & Light Company agricultural development en gineer. Vernon was looking at some corn grown under normal con ditions as part of the agricul tural research being conducted near Ellzabethtown, N. C., by CP&L, the Bladen County Pea nut Committee and Bladen County Extension Service. Next to the corn grown with out irrigation was a plot of tall, healthy, green corn stalks grown with the help of irri gation. From April 22 to July 1, only 5.2 inches of rain had fallen on the experimental plots. On some plots the rainfall has been supplemented with 6.6 inches of Irrigation. There also has been prelimi nary success fertilizing tho corn with an irrigation system. "The advantage over the con ventional method Is we can apply the nitrogen to the crop when it really is needed," said Steve Walker, CP&L lrrlga tln specialist. Corn is not Irrigated to any extent in North Carolina. As a result, a dry spell can be devastating, according to Ver non. "Some farmers will be lucky to get back more than the price of their seed because of the dry spell during the first few months of this year's grow ing season," he said. Vernon added, "A farmer needs to harvest approximately 100 bushels an acre for a pro fit. One long dry spell can cut a farmer's yield in half or more." Corn is also being grown without tilling the soil. "Plant ing without tilling is the com ing thing," Vernon saJd. "In stead of making three or four trips across the land with his tractor, the farmer heeds to make only one." The experimentation is im portant because thedemandfor corn Is increasing within the Carolina*. "Tho more farmers turn to raising livestock, the All In A Day's Work A 50-year observance al ways brings remembrances of "the good old says." So, It's small wonder that the golden anniversary of Extension Homemakers Club work brings stories such as this one told by Mrs, G. H. Becton, Wayne County. Mrs. Becton recalls how her husband, then a young man, would walk with Mrs. Estelle T. Smith, Wayne's first agent, to the railroad track so she could catch the train back to Ooldsboro. He would carry a lantern to flag the train for It was al ways dark by the time Mrs. Smith finished her community visit. Hardships such as these, made me glad I'm an agent in 1970 and not back "In the good old days," Mrs. Evelyn D. Raper, home economics exten sion agent, notes. Li BIG DIFFERENCE ? The benefits of irrigation are displayed by Hester Vernon, Carolina .Power & Light Company agricultural development engineer. At left is a corn stalk grown under normal conditions near Eliza bethtown, X. C. At right is n corn stalk grown under the same conditions, except it whs irrigated and fer tilized by irrigation. more they will need corn," Ver non said. "Farmers can replace lost tobacco Income and mini mize their labor requirements by growing corn on a profita ble basis." Some of the experiments In volve peanuts and soybeans. "We will be trying to prevent leaf spot by Injecting a fungi cide tnrough irrigation on the peanuts rather than drlvlngover the peanut vines applying a dust or spray by conventional method, said Jack Cullipher, Bladen County Extension agent. Peanuts and soybeans also are being grown by the no tlll method. CP&L, the ExtenslonService, and the Bladen County Peanut Committee Invite area farmers to stop by the experimental plot at the Junction of routes 701 and 242 south of Ellza bethtown. Tobacco Production Forecast Is Ud RALEIGH ? Production of fiue-cured tobacco Is forecast at 705 million pounds by the North Carolina Crop Reporting Service. If this estimate materializes, the 1970 crop would be 1.3 percent above the 1969 crop Of 695,665,000 pounds. This Is the first fore cast for the season and is bas ed on reports from growers about July 1. Flue-cured growers expect to harvest 382,500 acres?4,000 acres or 1.1 percent more than the 378,500 acres harvested last year. The expected North Carolina average flue-cured yield for all types combined Is 1,843 pounds?or 5 pounds above the average of 1,838 pounds per acre realized In 1969. 1 i I I GARDEN TIME fVl ^JF G . h (I r N C V> t . i t i ? The worms live In colonies protected by a web attached to the tree branches. They can be easily spotted and should be eradicated before they defoliate large tree sections. Spray with Sevln or malathlon, according to directions given on the container. Some like to burn them out using a wad of cloth on the end of a pole saturated with kero sene. If you use this method, employ which thrusts with the flame in order not to damage the foliage more than neces sary. Bearded iris may be lifted and divided anytime between mid July and early Sept. If you have not lifted and divided the rhizomes in the last three years, the plants are probably becoming crowded and should receive attention. Prepare soil well and add about one measuring cup of an 0-14-14 fertilizer to 10 square feet of bed space. Choose a sunny location as the plants will do better in sun than in shade. When planting, cover the rhi zomes with about one Inch of soil. Keep free of weeds and watered at all times. Earlier plantings become established in the soil and bloom better the following spring.
