Hints Given For
Care Of Plants
Poinsettia is the plant that
gets the most attention at
Christmas, but others, such as
blooming azalea, chrysanthemums
and Jerusalem cherry,
are also popular. You may have
received one as a holiday gift.
Here are some suggestions
for caring for them, as outlined
by Henry J. Smith, extension
landscape horticulturist. North
Carolina State University.
Keep azaleas in a cool spot
while they are in flower. This is
especially important at night. A
hot, dry atmosphere causes
faster flowering and shorter
period of bloom.
Cyclamen needs a cool
temperature, also. It prefers
something around 50 to 55
degrees at night. It also needs
maximum light for extended
bloom. If the night temperatures
are too high, leaves will
turn yellow and buds will die.
Also, if light is poor, leaves will
die quickly.
. Jerusalem cherry requires
good light and temperatures in
the 45- to 50-degree range for
attractive fruit over an
extended period of time. The
soil should be kept moist.
Potted mums require bright
light or full sun to produce full
coloration in opening buds. A
pool temperature is best. Pot
mums dry out rapidly and
should be checked frequently.
Water them as needed.

Fertilizer, Lime
Costs Are Up $700
On Tar Heel Farms
RALEIGH—The average Tar
Heel farmer spent $1,690 for
fertilizer and lime in 1974. This
was $700 more than he spent in
1973. Despite all cost — cutting
efforts his hill for fertilizer and
lime jumped from 7.9 percent of
total production costs in 1973 to
12.2 percent in 1974 — a small
percentage change hut collectively
it amounted to $106
million. This sparked an
interest in soil testing that
continues even though fertilizer
prices have declined-somewhat
since 1974.
A. L. Hatfield, agronomist
with the soil testing laboratory.
Agronomic Division, .North
Carolina Department of Agriculture.
cited some statistics to
emphasize the demand. "The
number of samples tested for
farmers and homeowners,
compared to pre 1975 testing,
increased 30 percent in 1975. 60
percent in 1976. and through
November testing for the"1977
crop is 105 percent ahead of
normal.
"1 know some people tire of
our enthusiasm and statistics
but we have been telling them
for years that they should try
it. Apparently they are trying
jrwJ. liking it.,'.' said.Hatfield. •
Supplying fertilizer and lime
for North Carolina is a
multi-million dollar business.
For the 1976 crop year the
equivalent of more than 717
thousand tons of 33.5 percent
ammonium nitrate, 333 thousand
tons of 45 percent superphosphate
and 677 thousand
tons of 60 percent muriate of
potash was sold. Add 1.2 million
tons of agricultural lime and the
farm price tag was close to $225
million.
"Soil Testing is not a
sure fire method of reducing
total fertilizer costs" Hatfield
declared, "hut it is the best
method we have to get the
right kind and amount where it
will return the most profit."
