Mrs. Frazier opened with scripture and thoughts on using the tongue wisely. Business included the selection of Mrs. Brenda Fuller as official chairman of the group for the remainder of the year. The adoption of a patient at Warren Plaza Nursing Home was decided. Plans were made for the annual family picnic to be held this year in the church yard on June 20 at 6:30 p. m. Mrs. Harriett Faulkner, program chairman, led in study of selected gospel parables and Miss Gwen Allen closed with prayer. The hostess served a tuna salad plate and Cokes. Noriina Girl Is Art Winner For The Year Amy Jean Williams, a freshman at Noriina High School, has won the "Superintendent's Choice" art award for this year. She submitted a charcoal drawing of Raggedy Ann, which was her "Principal's Choice" and winner in the Warren County unit. Amy has been studying under Mrs. Eileen Dudley for two years in the media of charcoal and water color. She expects to pursue her art work advancing later to oils and other media. She is a member of the Blue Wave Chorus which broadens her interest in the arts. -^-■Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Williams, Amy has a brother, David, who is a junior at Noriina High School. An exhibition of one piece of art work from each unit is now hanging in the State Capitol building in Raleigh. This summer it will be taken to the Superintendents Conference. The competition is an annual event. Honorable mention in the contest goes to Gregory Banks at Vaughan Elementary School, Albert Burwell at North Warren Middle School, and Leroy Richardson at South Warren Elementary School. Awards Given To Outstanding Clubwomen Two Norlina Junior Clubwomen have been recognized for their outstanding contributions to their club and community. On Thursday, May 19, Mrs. Ann Powell was awarded the outstanding New Club Member tray by Ms. Mary Lou Lewis, last year's winner. Mrs. Carolyn Dickerson received the Alice R. Robertson Congeniality Award from Mrs. L. 0. Robertson. These presentations were made during the meeting of the Norlina Junior Woman's Club held in the home of Mrs. Paulette Curtis. Mrs. Katie Fleming, club president, extended welcome to guests, Mrs. L. 0. Robertson, president of the Norlina Woman's Club and State Conservation Chairman for the North Carolina Federation of Woman's Clubs, and .Mrs. Anne B. Davis, CTerK of "Tourt for" Warren County. Business handled included the selection by the education department of the recipient for the scholarship to be awarded a North High School Senior graduating this June, plans for the brunswick stew project to raise those funds and a report on the volunteer work lone by the club in providing dinner for 30 workers who manned the Red Cross Blood Mobile in Vorlina earlier in the nonth. John Perkinson Completes Session John L. Perkinson, son of Mrs. Ann Perkinson Norvell of Norlina, has successfully completed the eighth session of the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation Academy conducted by the N. C. Justice Academy in Salem burg. Tlie Academy, which is fourteen weeks in duration, consists of an advanced study of criminal and scientific investigation. Special Agent Perkinson will be stationed in Monroe and will be working general criminal investigations. . Drewry Women Have Meeting The United Methodist Women of Drewry met last Monday with Mrs. Mollie Paschall. Mrs. Paschall opened the meeting with a reading dedicated to all the members. Mrs. Louise Ranes presented the devotion and program, "What I Know About Being Beautiful," assisted by Miss Donna Paschall, who gave a poem entitled "So Swift Is The Way." Mrs. Paschall led the eight members and two visitors in a Bible quiz. Refreshments served by the hostess were sausage biscuits, cake and coffee. 'Mary Fleming Day' Observed One of the largest, if not the largest, crowds ever to attend the Norlina Methodist Church was present Sunday to celebrate "Mary Fleming Day." Mrs. Fleming is in her 105th year and has just recently been recognized as North Carolina's Senior Citizen of the Year. Many letters of congratulations were read, including ones from President and Mrs. Carter, Governor Hunt, members of the North Carolina Congressional delegation, and past ministers of the church. A bouquet of flowers and a certificate of appreciation Travellers To West Have Returned Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Paschall have returned to Norlina after four days in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mr. Paschall was awarded the trip for his outstanding work with the Home Beneficial Life Insurance Company. His appointment to the Leader's Club made him qualify for attendance at the company's annual convention. Eight hundred people 'attended from across the nation. Mr. Paschall was the only agent in this area to qualify. The Paschalls stayed at the MGM Grand Hotel, participated in a workshop meeting on Thursday, enjoyed entertainment by Mac Davis and John Biner and toured the Hoover Dam. Brunswick Stew Sale To Be Held Members of Chapter No. 158 Order of Eastern Star will have a brunswick stew sale on Wednesday, June 1, at the home of C. E. (Chief) Carter on Hyco Street. The stew will be ready at 12 noon and will sell for $2 a quart. Customers are asked to bring their own containers. Advance orders can be placed with Mrs. Jackie Carter at 456-2240. was presented Mrs. Fleming by the Rev. Nat Burgess, present minister of the church, from the Norlina Methodist Church. The guest speaker for the occasion was the Rev. Bruce Pate of Grace Memorial Methodist Church, a former minister of the Norlina Methodist Church. The Rev. Mr. Pate in recounting the days and hours spent with Mrs. Fleming, took his theme from a song from the "Sound of Music" in describing this remarkable lady. "Many words can be used to describe this lady; however, two stand outBeautiful and Vitality," stated the Rev. Mr. Pate. "I remember once Mrs. Fleming saying, 'If I had known I was going to live so long, I would have taken better care of myself.' " Pate continued, "I understand now that her favorite pastime is riding with her physician in his new sports car." The Rev. Mr. Burgess read a history of the church which was written by Lucille Rose Uzzle of Dunn, a former member of the church and whose father, O. A. Rose, was a charter member. Special music was prepared for the occasion with soloists being the Rev. Mr. Pate and Patricia hicks, accompanied by Mrs. A. B. Hair. There were out-of-town guests from five states and five generations of the Fleming family in attendance. Wins Honor Artelia M. Covington, daughter of Mrs. Nancy J. Covington of Norlina, was named to the Alpha Kappa Mu's Special Honor List at Elizabeth City State University. ~ Artelia, a freshman majoring in Political Science, won this distinction after being named to the Academic Vice Chancellor's List. In order to qualify for this honor a student must have a cumulative average of 3.25 or above at the end of the first semester. Artelia is a 1976 graduate of Norlina High School. In Hospital John W.
