Simmons And Workshop Students
Printmaking Studies In Warren
Printmaking workshops
were held in the Warren
County public high schools
and junior high schools
Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday.
These workshops were
sponsored by the Warrenton
Arts Commission and in
structed by Susan Simmons
as part of the cultural
outreach program.
The purpose of these
workshops was to educate
the populace to the methods
and media of art and artists
as well as to introduce a new
and easily attainable art
form to a group of persons
who will benefit from this
exposure.
The workshops used hand
printing methods, such as
stamping and transfer.
Image making was the
central theme of this visual
art form.

for Retarded Citi
zens is conducting its annua
membership drive. Membership
is open to parents
Dr guardians of the retarded,
professionals working in
this field, and all other
interested persons.
The goals of the Association
are to assist in the
planning development and
expansion of local services
for the retarded, to increase
public awareness of their
(leeds and capabilities and
serve as a source of
nformation and assistance.
The Warren County Chaper
is affiliated with the
itate and national organizaion.
It was chartered last
tune and during its first
ear of existence realized
me of the highest memberhip
rates per county
lopulation of any chapter in
he state.
Ann Walker, member of
the Board of Directors of the
Warren County Chapter
stated that, "There are a
great many services available
to the over 800 retarded
residents of Warren County.
These include the special
education classes of the
public schools, such services
offered by the Area
Mental Health Program as
the Early Intervention Project,
the Child Development
Center and Lakeland Industrial
and Vocational Skill
Center, a sheltered workshop
located just north of
Henderson.
"However, a great deal
needs to be done, especially
in the areas of day and
residential programs for
adults," she added. "From
an educational, humanitarian
and economic perspective,
it is much desirable to
provide programs in the

students recently honored at
the initiation ceremony of
the Gamma Epsilon Chapter
of Phi Theta Kappa at
Louisburg College. The
honorary fraternity is based
on academic excellence,
moral character and citizenship
judged by faculty and
members of Phi Theta
Kappa.

Littleton Man
To Be Honored

LITTLETON—Paul A.
Johnston of Littleton will be
among the M living paat
presidents of the North
Carolina Merchants Association
to be honored at the
75th annual meeting in
Raleigh, according to an
announcement made this
week by Durward Gunnells
of Charlotte, chairman of
the 1977 Convention Committee.
Johnston, a native of
Littleton and a retired merchant,
received his education
at Littleton High School
and Baltimore Business College
where he received a
diploma in banking, bookkeeping,
business and commercial
law. He holds a
diploma in penmanship
from Zanner and Blosser in
Columbus, Ohio.
He began his career as
manager of the hardware
department for Eugene
Johnston Company where
he worked for three years
then bookkeeper for six
years, when he subsequently
bought a partnership in
the firm.
He served for 20 years on
the Littleton School Board,
holding the office of secretary
until his resignation.
He was a director of the
Bank of Littleton until its
merger with the Bank of
Halifax.
For 25 years he served as
director of the Merchants
Association. He is a charter
member of the Lions Club
and was the first secretary
and later president. In the
1920's he was elected to the
Littleton City Council. He is
a long-time member of the
Littleton Baptist Church,
where he has been chairman
of the finance committee
and church clerk. For several
years he also served his
church as deacon and still
serves as clerk.
Johnston is treasurer and
a director of Camp Willow
Run and has been since its
beginning in 1968.
He is listed in the 1962
edition of "North Carolina
Lives — The Tar Heel Who's
Who."
He is married to the
former Cara Glasgow of
Weldon. He is the father of
two daughters, Mrs. S. A.
Rhyne of Richmond, Va.,
and Mrs. Dorothy J. Speight
of Silver Spring, Md.

Funeral services for
Henry Ellas Shaw, 74, of
Warrenton, who died in
McGuire's Veterans Hospittl
in Richmond, Va.,
aturday, were held in
Ahoskie Sunday. Rites were
conducted from Garrett
Funeral Home and burial
was in the Ahoskie cemetery.
Mr. Shaw was a retired
highway engineer.
He is survived by his
widow, Mrs. Pauline Shaw
and four sisters, Misses
Isabel and Hazel Shaw of
Ivanhoe, Mrs. Mary Monroe

Joseph C. Short, 54, of Route
2, Warrenton, were held at 2
p. m. Tuesday from Tabernacle
Baptist Church in
Vance County by the Rev. A.
T. Roberson and the Rev.
Dudley Neal. Burial followed
in Elmwood Cemetery in
Henderson.
Mr. Short, a native of
Vance County and a Warren
County farmer, died in
Maria Parham Hospital in
Hendrson on Sunday night.
He is survived by his
mother, Mrs. Madolia A.

sisters, Mrs. Clara Barker,
Mrs. Alma Short, and Mrs.
Edna Neal, all of Warrenton,
and Mrs. Helen Mauer

Mrs. Roberline Fender
Briggs, 80, of Marshall,
mother of Mrs. Macie Limer
of the Elberon community,
died May 16 in an Asheville
hospital after a long illness.
Services were held May 19
at 2 p. m. at Foster Creek
Baptist Church. Burial was
in Mars Hill Cemetery.
In addition to Mrs. Limer,
she is survived by her
husband, Roscoe C. Briggs;
four daughters, Mrs. Jessie
Nesbitt, Mrs. Frankie
Thomas, Mrs. Jean Flowers
and Mrs. Wanda English of
Mars Hill; four sons, Ralph,
Leonard, Hubert and Phillip

Mrs. Palmer is survived

Palmer of Brooklyn, N. Y.,

Wright Bolton, 72, of Route
2, Henderson, died Sunday
morning in Duke Medical
Center in Durham after five
months illness. He was a
retired farmer and a former
resident of Warren County.
The funeral was held at 2
p. m. Tuesday from Jerusalem
United Methodist
Church by the Rev. James
Hebel and the Rev. David
Boan. Burial was in the
church cemetery.
Mr. Bolton is survived by
his wife, Mrs. Thelma F.
Bolton; two sons, Wright
Bolton, Jr., of Henderson
and William Thomas Bolton
of Silver Springs, Fla.; two
daughters, Mrs. Katherine
Kimbrough of Colonial
Heights, Va., and Mrs

died May 12 in New York.

Jersey.
He is survived by his wife,
