Local Man Travels
To Collect Squid
By BARBARA COOKE
William Dickerson of
Norlina returned last week
from a 16-day trip to Rhode
Island, where he and four
others from Burlington, all
employees of Carolina Biological
Supply, gathered
squid bought from commercial
fishermen.
The squid (also, the other
zoological specimen grown
and collected locally by
Dickerson for Carolina
Biological) are prepared for
purchase by the distribution
to schools and colleges. The
squid are used in laboratory
study.
Dickerson explained that
the squid are collected and
then graded into three
different sizes — medium,
eight to 12 inches, large, and
extra-large, 16 inches and
up. He said that "on the
spot, while they are still
fresh" the squid are injected
with liquid latex into the
circulatory systems. "This
latex _ sets up like a
rubber band and allows a
student dissecting the squid
in a classroom to trace the
arteries. Students can also
compare the system of the
squid with other types tc
determine the more advanced
life form."
The squid are stored in
drums containing a mixture
of sea water and formaldehyde.
Working in the chill
winds off of Narragansetl
Point, the men collected 5(
55-gal. drums of squid in 1C
days. Dickerson added that
the fishermen's traps which
are placed in the waters ol
the Rhode Island Sound cost
$25,000 each.
Squid are not found in all
waters and in remote area:
they can reach 40 feet in
length. The squid has 1C
tentacles and a unique
propulsion system that gave
the Germans the idea for the
jet plane. Squid are alsc
bought for eating. Cut intc
strips like bacon and fried
Dickerson found them to be
all right but "chewy."
