Fans Given A Treat

basketball fans were given a
rare treat Saturday as three
players from the University
of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill visited Soul City to hold
a free basketball clinic
under the auspices of the
Soul City Parks and Recreation
Association. Walter
Davis and John Keuster,
former Tar Heel cagers,
joined AU-American guard
Phil Ford of Rocky Mount
for the clinic.
During the clinic the
Carolina superstars touched
on all the fundamental skills
of playing basketball. They
showed proper shooting and
dribbling techniques, defensive
and offensive tactics
and how to make free
throws.
Davis has signed a professional
contract with Phoenix
and Keuster has signed with
Kansas City. Ford will
return to UNC this fall for
one more season as a Tar
Heel before venturing into
pro ball.
Tommy LaGarde, former
center for the Tar Heels,
was scheduled to be in Soul
City but had to cancel the
Wilson Team Wins
Softball Tourney
The Gang, a men's
slow-pitch softball team
from Wilson, won an invitational
tournament sponsored
by the Afton-Elberon
Ruritan Club over the
weekend. Uncola of Littleten
placed second and
Golden Skillet won a third
place trophy. Renn-Currin,
Haithcock Brotht.s and
Munn's Exxon were the
fourth-fifth-and sixth-seeded
teams, respectively, in
the 14-team tourney.

Soul City Jaycees
Hold Their July
Dinner Meeting

Soul City Jaycees held
their July dinner meeting at
the N. C. Central Orphanage
in Oxford last Wednesday
evening. Prior to the
business session, the Jaycees
enjoyed a delicious
meal prepared by the
kitchen staff at the orphanage.

Howell and Dennis Quick,
staff members at the orphanage,
took the Jaycees on a
tour of the campus, visiting
the dormitories and other
facilities which house and
provide recreation for some
76 disadvantaged youths
between the ages of 4-19.
The business meeting was
called to order by Lewis
Myers, president.
Kenneth Bender, reported
that the Jaycees took 29
boys to the annual NorthSouth
All-Star football game
in Greenville on July 23.
Bender said that everything
ran smoothly, adding that a
few parents had voiced their
appreciation to the Jaycees
for making the trip possible.
Each Jaycee member donated
one admission ticket
to the game to be used by a
youngster.
The next scheduled meeting
will be held on August 10

7:30 p. m. All members are
urged to attend.
