Emphysema is rapidly
increasing. Recently, the
Veterans Admin, doubled
the number of medical units
for treating the disease.
One-half of all American
men are afflicted in some
degree, a V.A. doctor
estimates. Emphysema is a
clogging and weakening of
the tiny air sacs of the lungs.
The ability of the lungs to
absorb oxygen into the
blood is reduced, with
shortness of breath and
heavy breathing the result.
Activity becomes very restricted.
Smoking is one cause air
pollution another.
Obviously both must be
reduced if lung tissue is to
remain clean and free to
function.

Happenings
By MARTHA PAGE
It has been a beautiful
week and all of our
residents have been out
sitting in the beautiful
sunshine ,
It has been a busy two
weeks here for us. We
have had a lot of visitors
and a lot of activity going
on Some of our people
have gone home for short
visits.
On Sunday, April 20, a
group from the Pleasant
Grove Church came out
and held a very inspiring
service for us The pastor
is the Rev. Norman
Richardson These people
have been coming to the
rest home for a long time
and always bring a lot of
delicious homemade
cakes and pies and other
refreshments and the
residents look forward to
their coming On Tuesday.
the 22nd. a group
from the Norlina Gospel
Baptist Church came out
and held a short service
and served refreshments.
The Rev. Raymond Ayscue
is their pastor.
On Saturday night, the
26th. the rest home
ministers, with Jim Cooper
as leader, came from
Rockj Mount to entertain
our people This is one of
the most dedicated
groups of young men I
have ever seen. They
really leave the residents
feeling good when they
leave. They hold their
worship service and then
when they are through
they entertain the residents
with some pop and
country music on the
piano. The residents sing
along and sometimes the
whole building is "rocking
"
The South Henderson
Church of God has been
coming every Sunday
afternoon and bringing
their choirs to entertain
the people here. They
have several choirs in
their church and bring a
different one each Sunday.
They brought their
youth choir last Sunday
and we heard some of the
loveliest music we have
heard in a long time. This
is a fine young group and
we are so happy to have
them coming each week.
It seems that most of
our visiting groups are
from out of town and we'd
like for some more of the
local groups to get
interested in coming and
being- a part of little
community.
This past Sunday afternoon
I took a van load of
our residents to Littleton
to see the ladies softball
tournament and I have
never seen them enjoy
anything as much. We
had hotdogs and drinks
while we were there and
this was a big treat for
them. They were so
enthusiastic about this
trip that we are going to
try to make arrangements
to take them to
some more games. Mrs.
Alma Debnam accompanied
us to help look out
for everyone.
