To Have
Spelling Bee
A county-wide "spelling
bee" has been
planned for sixth graders
in the Warren County
schools system. Rosiland
Gilliam, general supervisor,
announced that the
event will take place on
Thursday night, May 8, at
the North Warren Middle
School, beginning at 7:30.
Each sixth grade class
has selected two students.
with the combination
classes selecting one
student each, to participate.
The participants
are Renea Alston. Laurie
Barker. Mario Daniels.
Tonya Hendricks. Holly
Howell. Sharon Jefferson.
Carol Lewis. Rita
Norwood, Cindy Pike.
Christina Pryor. Rory
Richardson, Richard
Roddy, Beverly Rooker,
Jennifer Stewart, Wayne
Waller and Stephanie
Wilkins
First, second and third
place prizes will be
awarded. All participants
will receive some type of
award or recognition.
The following "Rules
and Regulations" will be
observed during the spell
down:
- All words will be used
in sentences.
-Each pupil will have
two chances to spell the
word correctly.
- A misspelled word
will be passed on to the
next person in line.
• The pupil must say
the word before spelling
the word.
-No student will take
over 15 seconds to
attempt to spell the word.
The judges will make
all final decisions on correct
use of rules, 15
seconds time limit, and
the correct spelling of the
word..
-There will be no
talking or helping during
the "Spelling Bee."
Junell Epanchin. director
for Exceptional Programs,
will assist by
calling the words. Arnetra
Johnson and Rebecca
Corbett will be the
judges.
Riley Named
New Head
By RUTH MINCHER
David E. Riley, III, has
been named new camp
director at Camp Willow
Run near Littleton. Announcement
of his new
post was made by Mrs.
Linda E. Harris and the
camp's board of directors.
Riley, named assistant
camp director in 1975,
will take over the post
held by Mrs. Harris for
many years. He served as
a camp counselor during
the early Seventies.
A native of Rocky
Mount. he attended
Louisburg College and
Halifax Community College.
He now serves as
vice chairman of the
board of deacons of the
Littleton Baptist Church.
Riley is married to the
former Miss Beverly
Cockerham of WinstonSalem,
who helps with the
mission studies at the
camp during the summer.
They are expecting
their first child in August.
Mrs. Harris and her
first husband, the late
Rev. Erbie Mangum, Jr.,
founded the well known
camp. She will now be
serving as executive
director of Youth Camps
for Christ, the interdenominational
non-profit
corporation developing
Camp Willow Run.
She and her husband,
Robert T. Harris and
their family, will live on
the campgrounds during
the summer and she will
continue to be involved in
the camping program.
This j summer marks
Camp WiDow Run's tenth
year in resident camping.
