(Staff Photo) Court Square Arts Festival Is Termed Complete Success1 By MARY HUNTER Glorious weather provided a perfect setting for the first annual School Arts Festival, sponsored by Warren County Schools, Saturday on the Courthouse Square. This year's festival was a joint effort of the arts and music programs in the schools and the Warren County School's Exceptional Program. Included were elaborate displays of artwork completed by children in the schools throughout the school year as well as musical performances by the schools' bands and choruses. The Exceptional teachers sponsored "The Very Special Arts Festival" which included artwork completed by children in the schools' exceptional classes as well as booths for face painting, balloon sales, weaving, sand painting, finger painting and coloring. Gaston Enterprises, a local sheltered workshop, sold baked goods, popcorn, soft drinks and crafts. Vocal performances were presented by the Warren County Elementary Chorus, the North Warren Elementary Chorus, the John Graham Chorale Society and the Blue Wave Chorus, directed by Gloria Turner, Ardith Roddy, Glendora Powell and Howard Stultz, respectively. ITie Norlina Concert Band, directed by Stanley Baird, and the Warrenton District Band, directed by Joel Townes, provided instrumental performances. Also included in the day's activities were storytelling by winners of the Warren County Schools Storytelling Contest, and a puppet show, sponsored by Jerusalem Methodist Church. The North Carolina String Quartet, a group of musicians with the North Carolina Symphony, performed throughout the day, entertaining both children and adults with compositions for strings as well as with discussions concerning the instruments and composers. "Hands-on" arts and musical experiences were provided by the art and music teachers so that children and adults attending the festival could not only browse but participate in activities themselves. WVSP, a local public radio station, provided an emcee for the day's activities, Steve Hyman. Members of the John Graham National Honor Society and the North Warren Safety Patrol served as guides and helpers throughout the day. The festival was well attended and seemingly enjoyed by everyone. Farmers who have not completed their plantings of program crops by June 15 will be allowed to report their intended plantings, and the operator will be responsible for reporting when the planting has been completed The operator or a person he has designatr d must be prepared to list the crop acreages in each field and locate them on an aerial photograph of the farm. Each producer must sign the form requesting benefits, furnish his address, social security number and list of all farms in which he has an interest. The county will be flown for aerial observation.
