Health Department ^
Are you between the ages of 17 and 22? If so, do
you think you could have a problem with
hypertension? If your answer is yes, you're
correct. If your answer is no, then you don't know
the facts about high blood pressure.
Untreated high blood pressure causes heart
disease, stroke, kidney failure, and blindness.
Heart disease is presently the leading cause of
death in the United States. One out of six
Americans has hypertension. In Warren County
the incidence rate of heart disease is 51 percent
greater than the average rate for the entire state
of North Carolina. If this rate continues, three out
of every four people in our county will have
hypertension at some point in their life.
It is evident that Warren County has an
enormous problem with hypertension. High
blood pressure is a serious disease if it is not
prevented or diagnosed in time. There is no cure
for it but it can be controlled with proper medical
care.
Our Community Hypertension Program
sponsored by the Warren County Health
Department is beginning an educational
program for the prevention of this disease in our
young people. During this month, Mrs. Rebecca
Greene, R. N., Hypertension supervisor, and
Mrs. Katherine Hilliard, Hypertension health
educator are conducting a screening and
education program in the Warren County High
School. The senior class is being screened for
high blood pressure and given the basic'
education about the disease, necessary for its
prevention.
School personnel and the Community
Hypertension Staff will be meeting during the
summer to plan for further expansion of this
program, using education as the key to
prevention.
In the Warren County High School the first step
is being taken with these seniors. We look toward
a better and healthier community for their
future.
