(Staff Photo) Warren County PTSA Has First Meeting Of Year The Warren County High School Parent Teacher - Student Association held its first meeting of the 1982-83 school year on Tuesday of last week in the school theatre. The WCHS Eagle Chorus under the direction at Howard Stultz entertained the approximately 200 parents, teachers, and students present. The chorus presented three musical selections, "Devoted to You," "Time in a Bottle," and "Bound for Jubilee." Stultz took the opportunity to teach a lesson to those present who were not musically inclined. He demonstrated the Zoltan Kodaly method of sightreading. This system of Do, Re, Me, Fa, Sol, La, Ti, Do is used by the chorus to learn all music. James T. Wilkerson, principal, welcomed all parents and thanked all present for their participation and cooperation in helping to make this school year a success. Wilkerson pledged his support to the PTSA and invited parents to visit the school at all times. The highlight of the meeting was the installation of new officers by Mrs. Loree Harris. Those officers are: Ulysses Ross, president; Mrs. Rebecca Ellington, 1st vice president; Mrs. Dorothy Smith, 2nd vice president; Mrs. Eva G. Howell, secretary; Mrs. Jeanetta West, co-treasurer; and Edward Tunstall, co-treasurer. Parents, teachers, and students were asked to volunteer to serve on the following committees; program, membership, project, hospitality, and publicity. Anyone not present at the meeting who would like to serve on any of the committees should call the school at 257-4413 or Mrs. Eva Howell at 257-3150. The next PTSA meeting will be announced at a later date. SEWAKU Seward Serving As Raleigh Page John "Max" Seward, senior at Warren County High School, is serving as a governor's page for the North Carolina General Assembly, Nov. 15-19. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Seward, John was selected to represent District III of North Carolina Future Homemakers of America and Home Economics Related Occupations and will serve as a page along with ten other FHA-HERO members from across the state. John is vice president of FHA-HERO at Warren County High School and is chairman of the "Families and Futures" project for District m. Frozen Fruits To preserve the color of frozen fruits, thaw fruit in its sealed container and serve as soon as thawed. A few ice crystals in the fruit improve the texture. Consherto Williams gets a firsthand demonstration of one of the computers used by the N. C. Department at Correction during her day as department secretary. Warren Student Plays Secretary Consherto (Sherry) Williams, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Yarbrough Williams of Rt. 2, Warrenton, was selected to serve as the counterpart to James C. Woodard, secretary of North Carolina's Department of Correction, during the 1962 Youth Involvement Day. On this annual occasion, high school students across the state came to Raleigh to serve with state officials in order to gain a firsthand appreciation of the functions of government. Bliss Williams is a sophomore at Warren County High School where die serves as a reporter for the school newspaper, "Hie Eagle Eye." She hopes to attend Duke University to pursue her interest in computer science. The Department of Correction was one of five agencies she asked to explore during Youth Involvement Day. Four other students served alongside other DOC officials during the day. There wore 110 students selected from high schools across the state to spend two days in Raleigh. Their schedule included workshops on the new federalism and a breakfast meeting with Governor James B. Hunt, Jr. "A STRONG NATION NEEDS STRONG SCHOOLS" AMERICAN EDUCATION WEEK November 14-20,1982 SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S PUBLIC SCHOOL WARREN COUNTY UNIT NORTH CAROLINA ASSOCIATION OF EDUCATORS Smoke Signals Game Held Saturday Warren Academy's Athletic Association sponsored an alumnaestudent game on Saturday night. The varsity girls and the alumnae boys were the winning teams. These teams were cheered on by the junior varisty cheerleaders. Proceeds will go toward the purchase of new sports equipment. As a follow-up, the varsity teams traveled to Tarboro to face Tarboro-Edgecombe Academy yesterday (Tues day) (or the first official game of the 1962-83 season. Results of that game were not available at press time, but will be published next week. Monday, the elementary grades viewed two films related to dental care. These educational films were enjoyed by the students. The vocational class is currently involved in a special workshop. They are preparing crafts for the Christmas season. At John Graham Team Players Picked By EVELYN HALL Boys and girls basketball players have been chosen for the 1982-83 season at John Graham. Both Jacket teams are hard at work practicing for their first game. The John Graham Choir, under the supervision of Mrs. Glendora Powell, will be presentinga Christmas concert on Sunday, December 19 for the public. There will also be a program for students in the auditorium in December. Students enjoyed a day off Thursday in observance of Veterans Day. They returned to school on Friday. Parent Visitation Day is scheduled for Nov. 29. The school office will be open from 10:30 a. m. to 6:00 p. m. for parents to pick up their children's report cards. At Norlina School Officers Elected By MICHELLE MEADOR The Norlina Middle School Parent-Teacher Association met recently and elected officers for the year. They are: president, Janice Crump; vice president, Virginia West; secretary, James Vaughan; assistant secretary, Brenda Vaughan; treasurer, Rosamond West; chaplain, William Shulenburger; and parliamentarian, Willie J. Cuthbertson. Projects for the school year were discussed and plans are underway for a Mardi Gras festival in the spring. Many of the Norlina students were excited to see themselves in The Warren Record last week. The students were in the background of the photo of Derrick Davenport receiving the Tom Suiter Extra Effort Award. Some of the people at Norlina are still excited about the entire visit of "Sky 5" to the campus. With a winning season in football behind us, we are looking forward to basketball season. The teams have not been cut yet. Read this column next week and find out who made the teams. Two groups at our school are out playing salesmen. The band students are selling spice sets to raise money for band supplies. The Student Council is raising money to finance a reward system for students who attain perfect attendance records by the month, semester and year. This group is selling old-fashioned stick candy. Please help out any students who approach you. Principal's Club Is Given Treat W. T. Ramey, IE, principal of North Warren Elementary School, has announced the Principal'8 Club for the Kay Thompson Student Teaching BOONE - Kay Fleming Thompson of Warrenton is among Appalachian State University's education majors participating in the 15-week student teaching program this spring. Thomoson is teaching 3rd grade at Prince ville Elementary, School in Edgecombe County under the supervision of Mrs. Carol Skipper. Ramey, took the 14 students to Hardee's for lunch with the help of Mi*. Claire Cooper and Bonaki Mushaw. Ramey stated that be expected more students to make all A's for the second six weeks because of the trip to Hardee's. Charles Blanks, the manager of Hardee's gave each of the students a ffflipiwi for a tree cookie. They were told they could get the cookie en thdr neat trip to Hardee's. WARREN STUDENTS RECOGNIZED — Warren County students who were named Merit Scholars at Vance-Granville Community College are congratulated by college administrators and faculty during a recent reception honoring the award recipients. In all, 12 students were presented merit scholarships by the VGCC Endowment Fluid Corporation. Left to right are Dr. Ben F. (VGCC Photo) Local Schools Represented At Meeting In Charlotte The Warren County Board of Education was represented at the 1982 NCSBA Annual Convention by Henry Pitchford, board member and Mike Williams, superintendent. Over 500 local school board members met November 11-13 at the Holiday Inn in Charlotte. Shirley Chisholm, senior Democratic woman member of the U. S. House of Representatives and former school teacher was a keynote speaker. Jack Blessington, vice president for Education and Community Services, CBS Broadcast Group also addressed the attendees. The theme of the Convention was "Your Public Schools: Committed to Excellence." Convention participants were able to choose from various clinics and workshops covering such topics as how to provide adequate employee insurance at a minimal cost, the effects of current reduction in force (RIF) policies on public education in N. C., a constructive alternative to merit pay, introduction to the Governor's Schools of Excellence and many others. The legislative priorities for the 1983 session of the N. C. General Assembly were chosen by the delegates. Among the priorities are school facility needs, allocation of funds to local boards on a different basis to compensate for declining enrollment, opposition to tuition tax credits, support for legislation to enable enforcement of the compulsory school attendance law, support for proposed changes in the N. C. Tenure Law, increases in salaries for school employees. The NCSBA, founded in 1937, offers inservice, information, resources, legislative, research and training services to members of the school boards across North Carolina. The NCSBA is an active participant in the National School Boards Association. NCSBA currently has about 950 members representing 145 local boards of education in the state. Superintendent Is Named Boss Of Year The Warren County Association of Education Office Personnel at its first meeting for the 1982-83 school year selected Michael F. Williams, superintendent of Warren County Schools, as Boss of the Year on the local level. His name also will be submitted on the district level for selection of NCAEOP Boss of the Year. On Nov. 2, members of the local association attended the Annual Meeting of the North Carolina Association of Office Personnel, District 10, in Raleigh. The Keynote speaker was George Sharpley, WILLIAMS NCAEOP executive director, and the association was delighted with an inspirational message in song by Jan Anderson.
