Mrs. Frank Hammer Daniel of Warrenton an
nounces the engagement of her daughter, Joanne
Kay, to Robert Lewis Evans, son of Mrs. Alice
Evans Herron of Norlina. Miss Daniel is the
daughter of the late Frank Hamer Daniel of
Warrenton. The wedding is planned for September
11.

Is Site Of Reunion
Descendants of
Wilbur Primus, Emma
Williams and Henrietta
Boyd Jones held their
25th family reunion on
July 24 at the Henderson
Armory.
The president of the
family group, Calvin
Jones, extended
greetings and gave
opening remarks, while
Wilbur P. Boyd served
as master of ceremonies
for the occasion.
The theme for the
gathering was "The Ten
Commandments for
Success," which was
discussed by Dr. Robert
E. Jones, Jr., a family
member. Other
highlights included
musical selections by
the Carolina Neal, Car
son Jones and Mary L.
Davis families.
A Share and Tell Hour
was led by Casper Jones
and Mrs. Barbara Bur
well Edgerton led a
memorial service.
Ms. Cherld Jones
recognized Henry
Hudgins as the oldest
member, Gregory
Taylor, Jr. as the
youngest member, and
the Rev. Spencer Davis,
Mrs. Hattie Davis Allen
and Joseph Jones, Jr. as
having travelled the
greatest distance.
Approximately 200
family members and
friends attended. Dinner
whs prepared by family
members.
First Teacher Is
Parent Of Child
Children begin learn
ing at birth, and the
knowledge they pick up
in infancy helps shape
the rest of their lives.
Fortunately, this impor
tant learning doesn't
take expensive nursery
equipment or require
parents to go back to
college.
"Most every home
and family has the
things needed for a child
to move ahead
educationally. It is Just
a matter of taking time
and knowing how to use
them," says Wanda
Hardison, Harnett
County home economics
extension agent.
She offers the
following suggestions
for parents of infants 0.3
months old:
—Respond to crying
promptly. This builds
his feelings of trust and
security.
—Rock and hold the
baby gently, talk to him
and smile often. "He
likes to move and feel
the touch of your skin
and body. Talk in a
pleasant voice, and
smile at him frequently,
now and throughout life.
This gives him a feeling
of security and helps
him begin to feel good
about himself," the ex
tension agent says.
—Place the baby on
his stomach, so he can
practice holding his
head up. As he gets
older, hold something
interesting for him to
look at to encourage
him.
—Around the fourth
week, be may be in
terested in a mobile
placed to the far right
and 5-to-8 inches above
him. Choose a mobile
with bold contrasting
colors which looks in
teresting from under
neath.
—Change Us scenery.
Carry him around the
house, or put Mm in an
infant carrier and place
him in different rooms
with you. This helps him
become aware of sound,
sight and color. Ha
needs to bear his
parents' voices and
many different house
hold noises. This helps
him develop listening
skills, which will help
him in leaning to talk
and read later in life.
Parents need to
remember that these
early "Icsmu" will be
brief. All children have
short attention spans,
but babies, may only be
interested for a few
or a few sec
onds. Keep activities
relaxed and enjoyable.
