John Ogle, standing, assists Warren County teachers with an estimation problem during a math workshop last week. Ogle, the math consultant at the Central Education Regional Center in Knightdale, conducted three math workshops which included teachers in grades K-6. Teachers in grades K-l studied "Math Their Way;" teachers in grades 2-3 attended a session on place value and estimation; and those from grades 4-6 dealt with problemsolving. The teachers shown here are, left to right, Jessie Davis, Connie King, Libba Traylor, Florence Owens and Diariece Williams. The workshops were hosted by South Warren Elementary School. (Community Schools Photo) Frozen Food Facility Plans Are Revealed (Continued from page 1) transaction to be concluded within 10 days. Industrial Developer Jim Whitley told commissioners that he thought the project should be "looked at closely. These gentlemen have expertise in the field and it offers an opportunity for diversification of local agriculture, the tax base, and local industry. It bears further investigation and has potential." Williams told commissioners that the prepackaged frozen meal operation alone was estimated to produce 100,000 units of product per day with $10 million in annual sales. In the agricultural cooperative portion of the project, Williams estimated that 480 fulltime farmers would be involved in the production of a single crop with 12,000 acres under production on farms averaging 25 acres. Annual sales would be about $4.8 million. Williams noted that the co-op stage would be the most difficult to implement. "Until something is in place, it is difficult for the farmer to believe it will work," he said. The company plans to pre-package vegetables bought on the open market in the initial stages of operation. The vegetable processing operation would employ about 50 people with $8 million in annual sales. The storage facility calls for 750,000 cubic feet in freezer space and $250,000 in annual sales. Total cost of the entire project is targeted at between $5 million and $7 million. Williams told the commissioners that with the $1 million grant and the $1 million in matching funds, the partners would then have the wherewithal to obtain further financing from commercial lending institutions. The county would act as what Chairperson Eva M. Clayton called a "pass through," meaning that once the funds are obtained, the county would be represented on the board of directors of the company, but would have no financial liability or other monetary obligation to the project. Williams said the prepackaged frozen food facility could be in operation as early as next year, if funding is granted. However, he cautioned that application for the federal grant is very competitive. Institutional Foodservices Group, Inc. is a minority company of which Williams is the majority stockholder. Although incorporated in Greenville, it is headquartered in Raleigh.
