Matthews, com mander of the State Highway Patrol, the number of vehicles using the state's high ways during peak travel hours has increased with the return of ap proximately 13,000 school buses. "The return of the slow-moving buses creates some traffic congestion during the morning rush hours the first few days of the school year," Matthews said, "but the congestion will be minimal if motorists practice patience." Matthews suggested that motorists leave for work a few minutes early during the first several mornings of school to help alleviate the congestion. "Others may want to take an alternate route and avoid the slow-moving McNair & Palmer Cleaning Services CARPET CLEANING SPECIAL 4 ROOMS - $70.00 Includes >01116111119, deodorizing and Scotchguard 4 ROOM MINIMUM OR $20.00 PER ROOM We Also Clean Upholstery Curtis Palmer Phillip McNair Warrenton, N.C. Since many children will be walking or riding their bikes to and from school, Matthews said motorists should use special care. "Never assume what a child will do," he said. "Always expect the unexpected," he cautioned. Matthews requested parents to instill in their children the importance of obeying the rules of safety as they go to and from school, while waiting for the bus and upon entering and exiting the bus. "It is also important that the children receive instruction concerning their conduct as passengers," he said. According to Matthews, an unruly child can easily cause an accident by distracting the bus driver's attention. "School buses trans port approximately 750,000 students to and from school each day. I know of no more precious cargo, and I call on every motorist to drive as if his or her own child was on every bus they see," Matthews said.
