Mr. and Mrs. Charles Morris of Virginia Beach, Va. visited Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Hundley recently. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Weaver, Jason and Mat thew of Greensboro spent the weekend with their parents. Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Coleman returned home Tuesday after spending eight days in Jackson ville and Little Rock, Ark. Charles Fleming of Colonial Heights, Va. visited his mother, Mrs. Myrtle Fleming, on Saturday. Mrs. Fleming's dinner guests on Sunday were Ruth Gettings and Gary Fleming of Chester, Va. Mr. and Mrs. Leon Pridgen of Norlina and Larry Pridgen of Dur ham attended the Caro lina—Kansas football game at Chapel Hill on Saturday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Leon Knight spent the past week in New Orleans, La. where they attended the World's Fair. The Knights also visited points of interest where Mr. Knight was station ed while in service. Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Coleman spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Danny Piacentino and Mr. and Mrs. Mar vin Holt Coleman, Jr. of Virginia Beach, Va. Bishop To Visit Here. Bishop Carlton P. Minnick, Jr. of the Raleigh District of the United Methodist Church will be the guest speaker at the Bicentennial of Methodism Celebration service Sunday, Oct. 14, at 7 p. ra. at Norlina Methodist Church. Members of Methodist Churches throughout the county will participate, and a joint choir under the direction of Mrs. Janet Coleman will bring special music. Norlina Church Circle Members Have Meeting Circle Three of the Norlina United Metho dist Women met in the home of Mrs. Leigh Traylor on Monday night. There were 10 members and one visitor present. Mrs. Jack Hawks presented a program, "Finding God's Guid ance." Circle Two Has Meeting Some eight members of Circle Two of the United Methodist Wo men were present for the October meeting on Monday night at the home of Mrs. Billy Fleming. Mrs. Fleming offered devotions. Mrs. Mildred Gris som, chairman, gave a program featuring the life of Francis Asbury, an early organizer of Methodism in America and later Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Mrs. Grissom also presided over the business session. Circle members will sell Clax ton fruit cakes again this year. Following the benediction, the group enjoyed a social hour. The circle will have its November meeting at the church and a cover ed dish supper will be served at that time. Mrs. Willie Robinson, circle leader, presided over the business ses sion. Circle Three will sponsor "Operation Santa Claus" for Warren County patients at Murdoch Center in Butner this year. Plans were made for the countywide Bicen tennial Celebration of Methodism Rally to be held at Norlina U.M.C. on Oct. 14. Circle members were urged to attend the sub district meeting to oe held in Zebulon on Oct. 25. Officers for the coming year were elect ed. Delicious refresh ments were served. A CORRECTION An article in last week's issue of The Warren Record about the birthday celebration of Mrs. Myrtle Fleming incorrectly listed her age. Mrs. Fleming is 83. The Warren Record regrets the error. Starfish Arms Arms on some starfish di vide and subdivide until they have more than a hundred branches and the starfish looks like a walking bush. Other' starfish can shed trapped limbs and crawl away. Still others reproduce by dropping an arm, which eventually becomes another complete starfish, National Geographic points out. Mrs. Carswell Named To MedVisit Position MedVisit, Inc. has announced the appoint ment of Leslie Carswell, RN, to the position of service coordinator for their Henderson branch office. Mrs. Carswell moved to Henderson in August from Galax, Va. Her husband, Fred, is plant manager at Cochrane Furniture in Warren ton. They have a four-year old daughter, {Catherine Meredith. Mrs. Carswell gradu ated from the Univer sity of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1977 with a B. S. degree in nurs ing. She also attended Murray State Univer sity in Murray, Ky., where she was a mem ber and officer of Alpha Omicron Pi Social Sorority. Mrs. Carswell has worked as a staff nune in coronary and inten sive care units as well aa done psychiatric nurs ing. Most recently, before moving to Hen derson, she was the executive director of the Hospice of Twin Coun ties, Inc. in Galax. As service coordina tor for MedVisit, Mrs. Carswell will be respon sible for services provided to patients in Warren, Vance and Granville counties in their home health program. She will coor dinate the use of rehabil itation and nursing sup port personnel. These include physical therapist, speech therapist, nutritionist, and a social worker. She directly supervises the office manager and nursing team leaders, also. MedVisit is a private home health company licensed by the State of North Carolina, cer tified for the Medicare and Medicaid program and is a member of the North Carolina Associ ation of Home Care and a member of the Hen derson-Vance Chamber of Commerce. Local Residents Visit Whitakers Chapel Thirty-two people from Norlina, Oine and Warrenton traveled to Whitaker's Chapel near Enfield on Sept. 25 in a trip sponsored by Norlina United Methodist Church in conjunction with the Bicentennial of Method ism being celebrated this year. Whitaker's Chapel was chartered in 1740 as a meeting place of the Church of England. In 177*, the small chapel became the Methodist meetinghouse. It was in the chapel, in 1828, that the First An nual Conference at the Methodist Protestant Church was held. The Methodist Protestant Church was formed from the Methodist Episcopal Church over the iane of lay rights, the Methodist Protest ants favoring the rights of lay people to partici pate in the affairs and decisions of the church. According to the Rev. Gene Cobb, pastor of the Norlina Church, "Lay rights can be contribut ed to the presence of the Methodist Protestant Church" and have had "a great influence on the church today." Another division in the Methodist Episcopal Church occurred in 1M4 when the Methodist Episcopal Church-South was formed from the Methodist Episcopal Church in a split over slavery. In 1939, the three churches, the Methodist Episcopal Church, Methodist Protestant Church and the Metho dist Episcopal Church South, joined to form the Methodist Church. Senior Social Club Members Conduct September Mc- ;ng By SADIE YANCEY Reporter The Norlina Senior Social Club held the Sep tember meeting with the Norlina Baptist group in the church social hall with 52 members present. The Rev. Gene Cobb, pastor of the Norlina Methodist Church, gave a most impressive devotion using the theme, "Blessed Assur ance." Mrs. Anna Fuller gave the treasurer's report and Mrs. Zora King read the minutes of the August meeting. Mrs. Hazel Norwood, president, appointed a committee to present a slate of officers at the October meeting. Mr. Clyde Edwards and Mrs. Pauline Robinson were the recipients of the door prizes. The entertainment committee presented several skits depicting Mr. Dennis Harris by Ola King and Mr. Oscar Baker by Marjorie Harmon. Mrs. Lucille Comma read several poems of interest to senior citizens and con ducted several contcc_ which were enjoye-' by the group. The meeting closed with the groin s singing "Love Lifted Me," ac companicd at the piano by Mrs. Gladys Perkin son. Mr. Oscar Baker requested that the group sing "I'll Fly Away," so Mrs. Ola King played for the group to sing. The Baptist members served delicious refreshments, for which the Rev. Jack Little, pastor of the Norlina Baptist Church, gave thanks. The next meeting will be at the Norlina Methodist Church on October 25 at 2 p. m. This will be the annual Halloween party, so everyone is invited to come dressed in Halloween costumes. On Saturday night, September 15, the Rhythm Band gave their first fall concert at Zion United Methodist Church with the Rev. Vern Wormack direct ing. The band played to a full house, after which everyone was served delicious homemade ice cram it* i,n Saturday night, Sep*. 22, the band traveled by church bus to Bethlehem Christian Church, with the Rev. Gene Coble as driver. The Rev. Jon Strother directed the band, which played to another full house. After the program, everyone en joyed punch and cookies and the good fellowship. The band will start practicing for the State Fair on Monday, Oct. 1, at 11 a. m. in the Norlina Methodist Church. Other practice dates will be announced at that time. The band feels for tunate to have the ser vices of three capable directors this year. We feel that we will be able to give the best perform ances yet. The Rev: Gene Cobb, the Rev. Russell Named To Top Post Bishop Beachie G. Russell of Boston, Mass. and a former resident of the Oine community, was recently elected archbishop and national overseer of the United Church of the Firstborn of the Living God in Philadelphia, Pa. Russell was born in Norfolk, Va. and grew up in Warren County where he attended public schools. He graduated from Warren County Training School in Wise in 1956, and is also a graduate of the Sowell School of Metaphysics. The son of Isabell Russell of Stamford, Conn., Russell is the grandson of the late Lucy and Norvel Russell of the Russell Union community near Norlina. Russell succeeds Archbishop Joseph M. Lindsay who died in June.
