According to reports, sparks from a fire on the back of a pickup truck ignited about 50 fires last Friday in Orange, Durham, Granville, Vance and Warren counties before the driver of the truck realized the problem and the Norlina Volunteer Fire Department was summoned to extinguish the fire. Apparently, sparks from the turck's exhaust ignited the wooden bed of the truck driven by Robert Green of Chesapeake, Va. who was I"โ€”โ€”:โ€” traveling north on the interstate. The fire spread to a sofa and love seat Green was hauling home for a Christmas present. As he traveled along the road, pieces of stuffing from the furniture blew out behind the truck, setting fire to grass along the road. Green was finally stopped at Stuckey's Pecan Shop at the Oine Road exit of 1-85 in Warren County after a fellow motorist signaled him to stop. Stuckey's manager and two other men fought the truck fire with extinguishers until the Norlina firefighters arrived. Although the love seat and sofa were destroyed, the truck was in adequate condition for Green to continue his trip. The fires were confined to grass and no damage to buildings resulted in any of the five counties. The fires have been ruled accidental. Also last week, three accidents were reported by the Highway Patrol in Warren County. On Friday, a Macon woman was injured after her truck hit a tree off N. C. 43 four miles south of Warrenton. According to Trooper T. S. Wright, Emma Ruth Richardson, 47, lost control of her northbound vehicle, ran off the left side of the road and struck a tree. She was treated and released at Warren General Hospital. Damages to the truck were estimated at $1,500. Ms. Richardson was charged with driving left of center after the 12:30 p. m. accident. Another accident Friday left two Henderson residents with minor injuries, according to reports. The two, identified as Joe Barbour, 23, and Crystal Weaver, 2, were injured in a two-vehicle collision six miles south ofWarrenton. Trooper Wright said Barbour was a passenger in a car (Continued on page 10) I
