At John Graham Activity Pace Is Reported Up By ANGELA BALLANCE On Wednesday, May 15, the Jackets played their last games of the season in Murfreesboro. Our girls' softball team trampled the Lady Raiders by a score of 12-4. The Lady Jackets softball team is 8 and 0 in the Roanoke Middle School Conference and has earned the conference championship. Members of the 1965 team are: Angela Alston, Jamesa Alston, Trina Alston, Johnette Arlington, Angela Ballance, Wanda Bullock, Shelisa Alston, Emmy Lou Cole man, Charlene Harrison, Carlotta Johnson, Tonyet ta Lyons, Mateland Mayes, Angela Neal, Bridget Perry, Solonnie Privett, and Wanda Richardson. The coach is Allen Reynolds and the managers are Kenneth Alston, A1 Kearney and Roger Taylor. Shelisa Alston has served as scorekeeper. Congrat ulations are in order for Coach Reynolds and the Lady Jackets for their conference title. Our baseball team also defeated Murfreesboro on Wednesday. The Yellow Jackets stomped the Raid ers by a score of 10 - 5. Our baseball team also finished first in the conference, tying with Conway. The boys' conference record was 5 and 3. Their coach was Macon Robertson. Yesterday (Tuesday), sixth graders who will be attending John Graham next year visited our school. The students came from Hawkins, South Warren, and Vaughan Schools. The eighth graders at John Graham took the sixth graders on a tour of the school and helped them to get acquainted with the school and the teachers. Several seventh grad ers gave short speeches describing the John Graham atmosphere and giving the sixth graders helpful hints. The Annuel John Graham Athletic Banquet will be held tonight (Wednesday) at 7 p. m. in the school cafeteria. The guest speaker will be Gregory Thomas, defensive back at Wake Forest University. Other events to place on your calendar include: The Miss John Graham Pageant at Mariam Boyd School on Thursday, May 23, at 7:30 p. m.; the com pletion of the pre-registration with the high school counselors on May 24; the eighth grade tour of Warren County High School on May 28; the "Evening of Elegance," a semi-formal dance, in the gym on May 31; and the eighth grade promotion exercises on June 13. At Norlina School Girls And Boys Conclude Play By DEXTER BANKS, LUCY HENDERSON, JOHNNIE TAYLOR, AL BULLOCK, AND ANTHONY HUNT The boys' baseball team and the girls' softball team finished their seasons. The girls finished with a 5-8 record; the boys record was 2-8. We appreciate the girls' and boys' teams for playing their hardest in all of their games the whole season, and we thank and congratulate all the spirited girls and boys who played softball and baseball this year. Also, the NMS athletic banquet will be held on Wed., May 29. All athletes and their guests are invited to meet in the cafeteria at 7 p.m. for this yearly event. In ap preciation of their efforts, the softball team had a skating and pizza party on May 21. Saturday, May 18 was the day of the King's Dominion Field trip. Students from Ms. Evans', Mrs. Brothers' and Ms. Shutt's advisories spent the day riding the rides, playing games and eating. It was a lot of fun, and we extend thanks to all of the teachers and chaperones who made it possible. The annual NMS Science Fair was held on May 17. The science teachers were the coordinators and directors of the science fair projects and the judges of the event were Vilma Gatling, Rosemary Harris, and Eva Howell. A list of winners with their pictures can be found elsewhere on this page. We are proud of all of the participants in this fair, and we congratulate the winners. You are invited to the Third Annual NMS Mardi Graf! When: Thursday, May 23,1985. Where: Norlina Middle School gym. Why: To raise money which will be used to pur chase needed materials for the school. The Mardi Gras will include a costume parade; the crowning of the Mardi Gras king and queen, a disco, a cake-walk, Bingo, and other assorted games and prizes, plus a Country Store. The main feature is the Dunkin' Booth. The public is invited to come out and participate in the Third Annual Mardi Gras, and a good time is assured! Coordination of legs and arms belonging to differ ent persons was the key to winning the Wheel barrow Race during Held day events held Friday at Norttalde Elementary School. A Hawkins Elementary School student competes in the Softball Throw during the school's annual Field Day on Friday. Other field events were the Over-and-Under Relay, 50-yard Dash, and Tug-of War. Winners were: fourth grade, Earl Bullock's homeroom; fifth grade, Mrs. J. A. Johnson's home room; and sixth grade, J. A. Robinson's homeroom. The day's activities ended with a softball game. (Community Schools Photo) MISS YANCEY Miss Yancey Is Honor Graduate Miss Juanita Yancey, daughter of Mrs. Sarah Jones Yancey and Bur nell Yancey, Sr. of Man son, received the bache lor of science degree in Business Education from Saint Augustine's College during the 118th Commencement Exer cise on Sunday, May 12. The 3 p. m. program was held at the Civic Center in Raleigh, with the Honorable Samuel R. Pierce, Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, of Wash ington, D. C., as guest speaker. Dr. Prezell R. Robinson, president of the college, conferred the honorary and academic degrees. At Saint Augustine's, Miss Yancey maintain ed a grade-point aver age of 3.19. She was a two-year recipient of the Business Education Honors Award, was named to the national and local Dean's List, and was nominated to "Who's Who Among Stu dents in American Universities ana Colleges." She was a member of the National Business Education Association • Southern Region, the Business Education Club, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., which she served as vice president and through Field Day Held At North Warren Under partially cloudy skies Friday, North War ren opened its annual Field Day with the tradi tional parade around the field. Leading the parade were the flag bearers earring the American and state flags, followed by the entire school body. Ribbons were awarded to in dividuial students win On Dean's List Miss Brenda Hicks, daughter of Helen Hicks and granddaughter of Mrs. Mamie E. Durham and Mr. and Mrs. Sam Hicks of Manson, has made the Dean's List at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. Miss Hicks is a 1983 graduate of Warren County High School and a rising junior at NCSU, where she is majoring in Food Science Technology. At North Carolina State Univer sity, she was named a second-year member of The Food Science Club for her outstanding achievement in her field of study. Omitted The name of Jennifer Jones, fourth-grader at North Warren Elemen tary School, was in advertently omitted from the school's honor roll published last week. The Warren Record regrets the error. which she was voted the Most Outstanding Sorority Figure of the year. She also com pleted Cooperative Edu cation affiliations with the Equitable Life Assurance Society of New York City and the IBM Corporation in Raleigh. Miss Yancey is a 1900 graduate of Norlina High School and a member of the Manson Baptist Church. ning and placing in events. The White and Blue teams from each grade level competed. Other afternoon games included the human wheel barrow race, 440 relay, and the finale— tug-o-war. As the points were tallied, students gathered around Mr. Knight and Mr. V. Williams, coordinators of Field Day. The trophy was awarded to the Blue team for the highest amount of points won from events. Field Day was enjoy ed by the students, faculty, and the many parents that came out to encourage support and cheer the students. Not only were the games ex citing and exhilarating, but the concessions spon sored by the school and the Junior Beta Club were also a highlight of the day's festivities. Bloodmobile Visit Planned At WCHS The Warren County High School is sponsor ing a Bloodmobile at the high school on Monday, May 27, from 9 a. m. un til 1:30 p. m., under the leadership of Mrs. Lois Williams, teacher at the school, and John Hud gins, assistant prin cipal. Warren County's quota of blood for the fiscal year ending June 30 is 400 pints. Current Honor Lists Are Released The Principal's List and Honor roll for the fifth six weeks have been released by Lucious Hawkins, principal of South Warren Elemen tary School. In order to qualify for the Principal's List, a student must receive all A's with no conduct grade less than a B. For the Honor Roll, the student must earn a grade no less than a B. Each student recog nized must be working on his grade level. Named to the Prin cipal's List were: Grade 4—Phyllis Al ston, Tamla Dunson, Anita Foster, Yolanda Green, Lorenza Hawkins, Treva Loyd, Robert Marshburn, Shena Royster, Tabitha Williams and Tamisha Wilson; Grade 5—Bernnadette Neal, Shornika Royster, Bobby Alston, Thaddeus Alston and David Jones; Grade 6—Nitasha Clark, Nichole Loyd, Richard Meadow and Karen Person. LAONEPON Laonipon Named In Talent Event Bert Vincent Laoni pon, student at Eaton Johnson Junior High School in Henderson, was among the seventh graders honored at Duke University on May 11 for their participa tion in the university's Fifth Annual Search for mathematically and verbally brilliant stu dents. Duke's Talent Iden tification Program (TIP) "was initiated in 1980 to identify bright young students, to help develop their special abilities and to direct them toward special academic programs for the gifted and talented. The 1985 TIP Talent Search involved more than 32,000 students and covered 16 southern, southwestern and mid western states," said Dr. Robert Sawyer, director of the program. Bert is an active member of the Math Honor Society, Nation al Junior Honor Society and the Eaton-Johnson Band. He is the son of James and Ann Laoni pon of Henderson.
