Walls are going up on the Littleton Civic Club shown above thanks to the contribution of time and talent from Preston Alston and Son, contractor. Backers of the center are hoping to raise between $5,MO and $7,0M for the next phase of construction, the roof. The Littleton Senior Citizens Club has contributed regularly between f 100 and $200 per week since the project was begun. Bloodmobile Visit Set The Warrenton Lioness Club will sponsor a Bloodmobile on September 4 at the Lions Den from 12 noon until 5:30 p. m. Church Services Slated The Church of the Good Shepherd in Ridgeway invites the public to a special service on Sunday, Aug. 25, at 10 a. m. The Rev. John Davis will officiate at the service. Methodist Women Set Meet Norlina United Methodist Women will meet Monday, Aug. 26, at 7:30 p.m. at the church. The speaker will be Michelle Releford Dalton, director of Walnut Terrace Child Development Center in Raleigh. All members and other interested persons are invited to attend. Furniture Being Sought Hie Mt. Zion AFC of GG is conducting a drive to collect furniture items such as wardrobes, dressers and chests of drawers for the elderly and needy. Persons wishing to contribute may contact a representative by telephoning 257-2120. Items are tax deductible. Benefit Program Slated The 15th Annual Benefit Program for the Warren County Rescue Squad will be held nt Mclver School Gymnasium on Sunday, Sept. 22, at 2:30 p.m. "We hope everyone will mark their calendars now for the program," Joseph L. Brown, one of the program's sponsors said this week. Donations may be sent to Joseph L Brown, P.O. Box 626, Littleton, N.C. 27850 or the Rev. Lawrence Harrison, Route 3, Box 111, Littleton. Checks should be made payable to Warren County Rescue Squad. Tickets for the program will be available at the door. Donations will also be accepted at the door. Anniversary Is Observed Warren County natives Glenn H. and Helen Stegall Phillips celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary recently at a reception given by their children. The Phillipses were married in Norlina on April 28, 1935 and have been residents of the Highland-Biltmore section of Portsmouth, Va. for the past 45 years. Their children, who hosted the celebration, are Mrs. Elsie McRae and Bobby Phillips of Chesapeake, Va., Mrs. Ann Woods and Jack Phillips of Portsmouth, Va. and Tommy Phillips of Moyock. They also have eight grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren. Mrs. Phillips is a retired electrician's helper from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, and her husband is a retired carpenter supervisor for Davis Construction. Mrs. Phillips is the sister of Mrs. Hector Aycockof Norlina. PA YNTER Funeral servicea for Lather Fredrick Paynter, 06, of Wise, were conducted at 2:90 p. m. Sunday at Wise Baptist Church by the Rev. Earl Peadin. Burial was in the Wise Cemetery. Mr. Paynter died Friday at Veterans Hospital in Durham. He was born Aug. 30,1918 in Warren County, the son of the late Maynard Andrew and Florence Wilkerson Paynter. He was a retired 20year Navy veteran and a veteran of World War n. He was a member of the Wise Ruritan Club. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Ida King Paynter; five daughters, Mrs. Linda B. Colbert of LaCrosse, Va., Mrs. Patricia P. Walker of Greenville, Mrs. Shirley A. Comer of Warrenton, and Mrs. Sarah P. Hayes and Miss Donna Paynter of Wise; three sons, Luther F. Paynter, Jr. and Gary Randolph Paynter of Wise and Wa.u«r Clayton Paynter of Burlington; two brothers, Calvin Paynter of LaCrosse, Va. and Leonard Paynter of Wise; a sister, Mrs. Catherine Par ham of Caproo, Va.; and 11 grandchildren. Pallbearers were Earl Paynter, fVjliy King, Donald Ray Paynter, Danny Paynter, Calvin Paynter, Wayne Paynter and Harvey Paynter. Honorary pallbearers were W. C. King and members of the Norlina Ruritan Club. SALLIE P. ALSTON Funeral services for Mrs. Sallie P. Alston, 77, of the Greenwood community, will be conducted at 4 p. m. Friday at the Greenwood Baptist Church by the Rev. Walter Yarborough. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. Alston died Aug. 16 in St. Mary's Hospital in Orange, N. J. following a lengthy illness. She is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Veronica Hawkins of Orange, N. J., Mrs. Vera Williams of Vailsburg, N. J., Mrs. Lucy Davis and Mrs. Noletha Taylor of Hampton, Va. and Mrs. Celestine Fields of West Orange, N. J; two sons, Willie A. Alston of Houston, Tex. and Clinton G. Alston of Warrenton; four sisters, Mrs. Cassie Wilson of Norlina, Mrs. Mattie Watson of Warrenton, Mrs. Ada Davis of Norfolk, Va. and Mrs. Otto Burchette of Brooklyn, N. Y.; a brother, Owen Durham of Norfolk, Va.; 19 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. The family will meet relatives and friends at Harris-Turner Funeral Home Thursday evening from 8-9 p. m. At other times they will be at the home in the Greenwood community. DAVID G. WEBBER Funeral services for David Gene Webber, 31, were conducted Friday at Southeast Presbyterian Church of San Diego, Calif, by the Rev. Dr. Leon F. Bracey. Interment was in Greenwood Memorial Park Mausoleum. Mr. Webber, the son of David E. and Mrs. Mattie Lee Davis Webber, died in Paradise Valley Hospital in San Diego after a lingering illness. Surviving in addition to his parents are a number of aunts and un cles, among them Mrs. Mary D. Williams of Warrentoo, Mrs. Ruby D. Amos of Kittrell and George M. Davis of Warrenton. ELIZA W.TERRY Funeral services foi Mrs. Eliza Terry, 90, will be conducted at 1 p. m. Saturday at Burchette Chapel United Church of Christ by the Rev. R. D. Bullock, Jr., pastor. Burial will be in the family cemetery in Manson. Mrs. Terry died Sunday night in Newark, N. J. She was a native of Warren County, the daughter of the late Herbert and Emma Bullock Walker. She was married to the late George A. Terry. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Annie T. Evans of Newark, N. J.; two sons, William Terry of Alexandria, Va. and Leonard Terry of Manson; 25 grandchildren; and 38 great-grandchildren. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
