In the news recently have been a number of characters who have passed the half-century mark and whose countenances sport neither line nor wrinkle and whose energies spurt forth undaunted. How can that be? Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse marked the passing of his 57th birthday Monday. Today he is every bit as lively as the little mouse which ran around in Disney's chilled studio years ago and which in spired the image of Mickey. The over-50 ranks this year welcome another of Disney's creations, Donald Duck, and Warner Brothers cartoon charac ters Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, Daffy Duck, Wile E. Coyote, Pepe Le Pew and others of the Merrie menagerie. The "wabbit" is as "wascally," the pig as robust, the duck as frazzled, the coyote as wily and the skunk as amourous in 1985 as in the year of their birth in the 1930's. They just don't age. Besides that, my children are every bit as en tranced by their antics as I was a generation ago. In 50 years, the duck having its beak blown askew by the irate hunter, and even the cat-eat-bird, rabbit humiliate-duck themes which abound in the scripts, have not aged. The expectations are that they will continue to provide somewhat innocent delight for another millennium or so of children. They are ageless. TV qualities which make a classic, having en during interest and appeal and permanent and lasting value, appear to be born of the mind and not of the body. Countless are the literary and artistic products of human imagination which do not grow old or show the effects of aging. They appear destined to live into eternity. On a more serious vein, I recently happened upon a description of a time in history which could not more aptly describe today had it been written this morning: "The Budget should be balanced. The Treasury should be filled. Public debt should be reduced. The arrogance of officials should be tempered and con trolled, and assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed lest we ourselves should become bank rupt. The people should be forced to work and not depend on the Government for subsistence." The words were penned in the year 60 B. C. by the distinguished Roman orator and statesman, Mar cus Tullis Cicero, a contemporary of Julius Caesar. Now, that's no Mickey Mouse.
