(Staff Photo by Howard Jones) Bronze Star Comes 40 Years Late Forty years ago, Claude J. Smith of Warrenton was notified that he had been awarded a Bronze Star for his ser vice in the U.S. Army in the European African-Middle Eastern Theatre of Operations during World War EL This past September, Smith finally receiv ed the medal, along with a commenda tion from President Reagan for "meritorious achievement in combat against an armed enemy." According to Smith, a friend who prefers to re main anonymous recently decided the time had come for Smith to get the military decorations he deserved and undertook the task of greasing the wheels of government bureaucracy. Smith, shown here with the Bronze Star and other medals of commenda tion, said this week that he served 310 days on the front lines and never got a scratch. "I got my medals," Smith said with a smile, "and that's all I want." Smith, a Henderson native, served in the Army from 194345. An employee of A&P Grocery in Warrenton, he will retire after 33 years of service in February. I Unexpected Gift Found By Afton-Elberon Man William L. Fuller, Jr., of Afton, received an unexpected belated birthday greeting last week, unbeknownst to the sender. On Tuesday Fuller, whose birthday was Monday, noticed an unusual white object in his pasture. Upon examination with binoculars, he deter mined that the foreign object was a cluster of "Happy Birthday" balloons which had been snagged by a tree limb. Fuller retrieved the balloons and learned from the inscription that the balloons had been sent to Jackie Dean of Louisburg. During the weekend, Fuller's wife, Eleanor, telephoned Dean and learned that the balloons had been sent to him anonymously on the preceding Saturday, a day before his birth day. Somehow, Dean said, the helium-filled balloons disappeared from his residence on Monday. The chain of events amounted to one of those coincidental happenings which come along rarely.
