Cancer News
Is Getting
Better Now
Most people usually
think the worst when
they see or hear the word
cancer," but now the
news about cancer is get
ting better, according to
a recent report from the
Warren County Health
Department.
'It is good to know that
everyone does not get
cancer," the report
stated. "Two out of three
Americans will never get
it. Better yet, more and
more people with cancer
are being cured every
year, and the best news
of all is that every day
you can do something to
help protect yourself
from cancer. That
something is preven
tion," the report
continued.
Scientists now know
that about 80 percent of
all cancer cases are tied
to the way people live
their lives. Gating and
working habits as well as
habits such as smoking
affect one's chances for
getting cancer, accor
ding to the health depart
ment's information.
"This means that people
can reduce their chances
lor getting cancer by
simply changing the way
in which they live. Some
factors of life are hard to
change, like your work
environment; while
other factors are easy to
change, like the foods
you eat," it stated.
The staff of the Adult
Health Assessment
Clinic of the Warren
County Health Depart
ment is available to
assist persons in the fight
against cancer. Services
available include a com
plete physical examina
tion and lifestyle assess
ment. Through the ex
amination, the staff can
detect signs of cancer
already present, while
the lifestyle assessment
aids in determining fac
tors which may require
change to prevent the
likelihood of cancer.
The staff at the local
department and the Na
tional Cancer Institute
have listed the following
tips for cancer
prevention:
-Don't smoke or use
tobacco in any form.
-Eat foods high in fiber
and low in fat.
-Include fresh fruits,
vegetables and whole
grain cereals in your dai
ly diet.
-Know and follow the
health and safety rules of
your workplace.
-Avoid unnecessary x
rays.
-Drink alcoholic
beverages only in
moderation.
-Avoid too much
sunlight; wear protec
tive clothing; use
sunscreens.
-Take estrogens only as
long as necessary.
-Have regular physical
examinations that can
detect cancer.
The Adult Assessment
Clinic invites questions
and requests for appoint
ments as it seeks to
change public attitude
about cancer. Interested
persons may telephone
257-1185 or visit the War
ren County Health
Department.
