(Community Schools Photo by Mary Hunter) Eye Care Advice Is Offered As Santa's sleigh wings its way southward this holiday season, the N.C. Society of Opthalmology urges parents to beware of toys that can injure young children's eyes. "Special care when buying gifts for children is critical in preventing toy-related eye injuries," said Dr. John Killian, president of the more than 250 medical doctors specializing in eye care. "There were over 7,000 toy-related eye injuries in the 15 and under age group last year," he said. "This becomes even more tragic when you realize that so many children are injured by toys they receive from well-meaning adults." To help shoppers make wise selections, the N.C. Society of Ophthal mology offers these tips: Check toys for jagged edges, exposed nails and sharp pins. Avoid toys with loose parts and toys that break easily. Always follow the age warnings listed on toy packages. Beware of toys that shoot projectiles such as air rifles, slingshots, dart games and bows and arrows. "Most toy injuries can be prevented if parents consider a child's age and behavior patterns when making pur chases," said Dr. Killian. "Even children who seem advanced for then age often have brothers and sisters who will have access to toys once they're brought into the house." According to op thalmologists, eye in juries are sometimes caused by "safe" toys building sets, paddle balls and battery operated playthings. What may appear like in nocent fun turns into a dangerous weapon when in the hands of a five year-old or older youngster who thrives on horseplay. "Even the most cautious parents can't be expected to supervise every minute of a youngster's day," said Dr. Kiilian. "It's good common sense to think twice before purchasing gifts like space swords, slingshots or BB guns. They're responsible for over one-third of toy related injuries." According to op thalmologists, a pair of eye goggles and a generous amount of parental supervision should find their way under treewith every' new chemistry set.^ especially if the recipient is between the ages of seven and 12. A pair of eye goggles can be eye savers for anyone scheduled to open a box of power tools. "Holiday eye injuries can be reduced if parents carefully consider the toys they select," said Dr. Kiilian. "And thoughtful present selec tion can help protect one of a youngster's greatest gifts, the gift of sight." MIDDLESDRG STEER HOUSE 'The Area'* Pioneer* In Fine Dining' U S. 1 NORTH-MIDDLEBURG.
