This season, Warren County tops the newly-formed Tar-Roanoke 3-A Conference, taking a 9-1 league mark into Tuesday's home game against Southeast Halifax. Friday night the Eagles close out the regular season at Northwest Halifax. Warren County clinched the title with last week's win over Tar boro and Monday night's rout of last place Southwest Edge combe. Last Tuesday, the Eagles led all the way, fighting off a late charge to win 87-78, in a high scoring affair at Tarboro. Leading 12-10 late in the first quarter, the Eagles went on a tear, scoring 16 unanswered points to take a 28-10 advantage early in the second period. Sparkplug point guard Ricky Wilkins scored eight points during the run. The host Vikings were stunned, but they recov ered well enough to cut the margin to 40-26 at the half. The Eagles continued to hold sizeable leads in the third quar ter. Derrick Alston hit eight points during the period and Tarboro could not come within ten. Taro Knight and George Barnes scored almost all of the Viking baskets as they closed to 58-40 at the quarter's end. The fourth period saw the Eagles match their biggest lead at 70-52 on a hoop by Alston. The Vikings would rally however. A three-point play by George Barnes finally got them to within 10 at 72-63. After they pulled to within four at 80-76, the Eagles scored seven of the last nine to seal the win. Ricky Wilkins was the high point man with 27 points. Sean added a silent 25, while Derrick Alston threw in 22. George Barnes and Taro Knight had 23 and 22 points for the losers. Monday night, the Eagles made up for Friday's postponed game by pounding Southwest Edgecombe 64-35. The win raised their overall record to 12 6. The Eagles were never in jeopardy in this contest. Leading 29-16 at the half, they opened the third period with a Clarence Watson slam-dunk and never looked back. Seniors Sean Moseley and Derrick Alston were the inside forces, control ling the boards over the smaller Cougars. The Eagles also played well defensively, causing Edge combe to shoot miserably from the field. Moseley and Alston topped the scoring with 14 and 11 points. Ricky Wilkins contributed 10. George Wooten had 11 points for Southwest. Girls' Game Warren County's girls' team won one of their two games. They were able to defeat Tarboro, but could not knock off undefeated Southwest Edgecombe. The Lady Eagles, now 14-4 overall and 7-3 in league play, are still strugging with Bertie to finish second in the conference. Last Tuesday the Eagles got off to their usual fast start and held on to beat Tarboro 39-32. Up 16-2 after the first quarter, Warren County was outscored 17-10 in the second period to make the score 26-19 at inter mission. The teams played to a 13-13 standoff in the final two periods and the Eagles notched their 14th win of the season. Tracey Evans led all scorers with 12 points and Fatima Craw ford added 10. Belinda Winnegon and Lisa Weiman scored eight points apiece for the Vikings. On Monday the Lady Eagles were simply overpowered by the Lady Cougars in a 54-37 loss. Af ter sticking close for much of the first period, Southwest began to pull away in the second quarter. They led 32-19 at halftime and 42 28 after three periods. The Eagles got no closer than 12 points in the entire second half. Zenobia Hopkins led Eagle scorers with 12 points, along with Tracey Evans who had 11. Pam Gorham finished with 22 points for Southwest Edge combe. JV Games The Eagle JV's lost at Tarboro 53-46 but rebounded to defeat Edgecombe 44-33. Deron Moss led all scorers in the Tarboro game with 18. James Howell pitched in 12 points. Glen Hart led Viking scorers with 17 points. Against Southwest Edge combe, the Eagle JV's used a strong fourth quarter to win a defensive struggle 44-33. Leading 22-14 at the half, Warren County outscored the Cougars 14-8 in the third quarter, putting themselves ahead 36-22. The Cougars attempted a fourth quarter rally but it fell short. Randy Jordan led the Eagles with 16 points. Deron Moss had 8. Tyrone Sumber hit nine for Southwest. Friday night's games at Northwest will be the last for the regular season. Next week the Eagles will be in Tarboro for the Tar-Roanoke Conference Tour nament. (o) *9 SEE THAT OPOSSUM? ) WHEN TROUBLE COMES, N HE PRETENDS TO BE DEAD., ~~L> (W 7~ WWY IS ME L PRETEMDIMG MOW ?
