News Events of Interest to Norlina Headers IMione to Include Items on This Paqe Capt. and Mrs. William Auth and children, Amy and Jeffrey, returned to their home in Land stuhl, Germany over the weekend after spending the past two weeks with Mrs. Auth's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Gooch. Mr. and Mrs. Julius P. Brauer, Samuel and Eric, of Washington spent the weekend with his mother, Mrs. Paul Brauer. Glen Harp of Goldsand visited Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Harp on Tues day night. Buck Wiggins, Stacey and Ben of Raleigh visited Mrs. Cornelia Wiggins on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Donald S. Wim brow spent the weekend in Ahoskie with Mr. and Mrs. Jim Steele and family. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Morris of Virginia Beach, Va. spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Jim Hundley. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Gooch spent the weekend in Washington, D.C. where they visitea Mr. Gooch's sister, Ms. Dorothy Gooch, and toured the Smithsonian Institute and other points of interest. Mrs. R. G. Norwood spent the past week in Durham with her nephew, Robert L. Goodbar, and his wife, Betty. Mrs. J. L. Thaxton and Denese of Goldsboro and Mrs. Debra Soule and daughter, Abra, of Rock Spring, Wyoming are spending several days this week with Mr. and Mrs. B. A. Thaxton. On Wednesday, Mrs. D. S. Wimbrow and Mrs. John Dore visited Mrs. Wimbrow's grand daughter, Carmen, who was a pa tient at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Elvin Edwards of Muscatine, Iowa and Mr. and Mrs. Victor Wologa of Payson, Ariz, visited Mrs. Essie Williams over the weekend, Mr. and Mrs. Buster Dishmon of LaCrosse, Va. spent the weekend with Mr. and Mrs. Ron Baker, Norwood and Beth. Stainback Team Finishes Fourth Kevin Dale Stainback of Raleigh was among the members of a team which placed fourth in the state tournament of the North Carolina Odyssey of the Mind competition on April 25. Prior to the state tournament, the team placed first in their division in regional competition. Stainback is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Stainback of Raleigh and the grandson of Mrs. Rachel Rose of Norlina and Mr. and Mrs. . A. B. Watkins of Palmer Springs, Va. He participated with fellow students at Powell G. T. Magnet School in Raleigh in the Great Art Lives category, which consisted of copying as accurately as possi ble a famous artist's original painting. The contest also includ ed a live team performance in which the performers began or ended in the same position as the subjects in the work of art. More than 150 schools across North Carolina participated in the regional competition. Miss Gilliam Marries Raymond Britt Paynter, Jr. Lindley Ruth Gilliam of Raleigh and Raymond Britt Paynter, Jr., also of Raleigh, were united in marriage in a 2 p.m. ceremony April 5 at Zebulon Baptist Church. The bride is the daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. J. Earl Gilliam of Zebulon. A graduate of Wilson Christian School and Atlantic Christian College, she is employed by Cameron-Brown Co. in Raleigh. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Britt Paynter, Sr. of Henderson. He is a graduate of Norlina High School and Oral Roberts University and is employed by Hudson-Belk Co. in Raleigh. The bride's father and the Rev. Frank Sossamon of Henderson officiated at the double-ring ceremony. The front of the church was decorated with a 15-branch arched candelabrum adorned with Oregon fern. The altar was adomed with two tree candelabra and the kneeling bench was decorated with greenery and satin bows, as were family pews. Nuptial music was provided by Mrs. Cecile Booth, organist, of Fayetteville; Miss Matilda Roberson and the Rev. Frank Sossamon of Henderson, vocalists; and Tim Stewart of the North Carolina Symphony, trumpeter. Given in marriage by her parents and escorted by her father, the bride wore a gown of white chiffon trimmed with Venise lace delicately trimmed with pearls. The princess neckline was also trimmed with pearls. The chapel-length train extended with appliques of Venise lace under a fine layer of chiffon. Her hat was of chiffon trimmed with seed pearls with a sheer illusion veil worn over the face with fingertip nettings. She carried her mother's Bible covered with white roses, stephanotis, baby's breath and flowing satin streamers. Frances Hawley of Zebulon was maid of honor. Bridesmaids were Pamela Mills of Camden, sister of the groom; Pamela Homer and Edie Jacomet, both of Raleigh; and Suzie Ward of Tarboro. Ushers were Ronald Mills of Camden, brother-in-law of the groom; Lee Gilliam of Nashville, Tenn., brother of the bride; Jeff Jacomet of Raleigh and Richard Clark of Knoxville, Tenn. Rebecca Mills and Ryan Mills of Camden, niece and nephew of the groom, served as flower girl and ring bearer, respectively. Reception A reception hosted by the bride's parents was held in the church fellowship hall im mediately following the ceremony. Pamela Jones of Wilson registered the guests. Mrs. Ida Oakes of Grifton, aunt of the bride, poured punch and Mrs. Velma Ferber of Hampton, Va., also an aunt of the bride, served cake. Assisting in serving and receiv ing were Mrs. Hannah Turnage, Mrs. Ava Taylor, Mrs. Helen Beaman, aunt of the bride; Mrs. Lib Harrison, Mr. and Mrs. Dar rel Gilliam of Sanford, aunt and uncle of the bride; and Mrs. Helen Beaman and Thomas Tur nage, aunt and uncle of the bride. After a wedding trip to Nassau in The Bahamas, the couple will reside at 6136 Johnsdale Road in Raleigh. Courtesies A floating miscellaneous shower for the bride-elect was held March 9 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Paynter, Sr. in Henderson. Hostesses were Mrs. L. H. Roberson, Mrs. John Elling ton, Mrs. Frank Fogleman, Mrs. Donald Harris, Mrs. Hugh Hoyle, Mrs. Randall Hoyle and Vickie Grissom. Approximately 50 guests attended. A surprise luncheon was given for Miss Gilliam by her co workers at Cameron-Brown Co. on March 20. Approximately 15 guests attended. The bride-elect and her mother, Mrs. Flora Gilliam, hosted a bridesmaids luncheon on March 22 at Mrs. Gilliam's home. The mother of the groom, Mrs. Dauphine Paynter, also attended. Russell Promoted By Marine Corps Marine Lance Cpl. Chester N. Russell, son of Vernice Russell of Manson, has been promoted to his present rank while serving with 3rd Marine Division on Okinawa. A 1964 graduate of Warren County High School, he joined the Marine Corps in December 1964. Norlina Senior Social Club Meets By SADIE YANCEY The Norlina Senior Social Club held its April meeting with the Warren Plains group on April 24 at 2 p.m. Approximately 60 members and visitors attended the meeting in the fellowship room of Warren Plains Baptist Church. Mrs. Janie Rivers and Mrs. Elizabeth Overby joined the club. The meeting was called to order by the president, Oscar Baker, who called on the Rev. Clay Shook, pastor of the Warren Plains Baptist Church, for the devotion. The pastor used the first verse of Psalm 23 for his text. The president then conducted the business session, including the reading of the minutes and treasurer's report. The Rev. Bob Lowman re ported on the recent trip to Williamsburg. April birthdays were recognized and Mrs. Janie Rivers received the door prize. Oscar Baker announced the mailing address for the band to be P. 0. Box 100, Norlina. The program began with the choral group's presentation of a number of hymns. Mrs. Estelle Robertson accompanied at the keyboard. Mrs. Hazel Harris and the Rev. Ralph Culler performed a harmonica duet. Mrs. Ola King conducted games with the group. Five men and five ladies participated in the necktie game, which ended in a tie. The four preachers present took part in a button sewing con test. James Wilson stood in for the Rev. Mr. Culler. The Revs. Shook and Culler won the picture frame and Mrs. Hazel Harris won the match game. The group was honored with the presence of four ministers: the Rev.
