Warren County's varsity boys'
team ended their season last
week with a loss to Northwest
Halifax in the first round of the
Tar-Roanoke Conference Tourna
ment. Finishing last in the league
with a 1-9 mark, the Eagles were
not invited to the 3-A sectional
playoffs.
TTie Eagles fought valiantly
against the taller Vikings but
were 72-62 losers. Ricky Wilkins
led the team with 18 points. Tony
Davis added 10 points, along with
10 rebounds.
Northwest went on to reach the
finals Saturday night where they
fell to Tarboro, 70-66.
Last week's loss ends a
frustrating season for the Eagles
and Coach Donald Austin. They
finish with an overall record of
just 2-19. In many of their games,
especially in the conference, the
Eagles were very close, but came
up short.
Girls' Game
The Lady Eagles lost a heart
breaker to Bertie last week in the
semi-finals of the conference
tourney after defeating North
west Halifax in the opening
round. Despite the loss, the Eagle
girls, now 13-5, qualified for the
state playoffs, liiey traveled to
East Carteret on Monday night
for a first-round game in the 3-A
sectionals.
In last Thursday's semifinal,
the Eagles fell to Bertie 31-29
after a last-second shot from near
mid-court. Bertie controlled the
first half, leading 11-6 after one
period and 19-10 at intermission.
But the Eagles regrouped and
outscored Bertie 14-6 in the third
quarter to pull within one at 25-24.
Trailing 29-26 in the final period,
the Eagles got a basket and a free
throw from Tracey Evans to tie
the game at 29-29. Then the team
played tough defense on Bertie's
final possession, only to see Val
jean Spivey connect on a despera
tion shot at the buzzer.
Tracey Evans led the Eagles
with 11 points.
Georgia Cofield and Erica Ruf
fin both scored 12 points for
Bertie.
Last Monday night the Eagles
won their 13th game, beating
Northwest Halifax 48-36. Up 24-18
at the half, the Eagles played
well in the last two quarters.
Angela Ballance led all scorers
with 13 points. Tracey Evans and
Tasha Alston added 12 and 11
points.
Gloria Arlington got 12 points
for Northwest.
JV Game
The Eagle jv's suffered a tough
loss to Northwest Halifax last
Thursday in the junior varsity
tournament. Leading 31-19 at
halftime, the Eagles lost their
composure in the second half,
allowing the Vikings to take a
47-44 come-from-behind win.
Charles Perry led the Eagles
with 16 points. Tywayne Williams
had 14.

Power Of Ice
Not only does ice produce heat
while freezing and absorb it in melt
ing; if floats, because (unlike almost
every other substance) it is lighter as
a solid than as a liquid.
If it were not for this phenomenon,
ice cubes dropped in a glass of water
would sink to the bottom. Icebergs
would not float. Lakes , rivers, and
seas would freeze from the bottom
up. The world would be in deep, cold
trouble.
