SUPT. ROBERT D. KIRK SUPT. HOWARD L. STEWART
Robert Kirk Is Named
Kerr Superintendent
Robert D. Kirk, chairman of
the Warren County Recreation
Commission, has been appointed
to the position of Kerr Reservoir
superintendent within the N. C.
Division of Parks and Recreation
in the Reservroirs District.
Kirk was promoted from the
position of park ranger at Kim
ball Point to Kerr Reservoir. He
has worked for the Division of
Parks and Recreation since 1977.
The new superintendent is a
graduate of A and T University
and holds a master's degree in
recreation administration from
North Carolina Central Uni
versity.
As superintendent. Kirk will be
responsible for the seven recrea
tion areas at Kerr Reservoir, as
well as 18 permanent staff mem
bers and dozens of seasonal
workers. In addition to ad
ministration, Kirk looks forward
to outreach projects as well, such
as coordinating educational field
trips with the schools and speak
ing tc local orgqnizations on en
vironmental and recreational
topics.
"People don't realize how
much there is to do at a recrea
tion area in order to run it right,"
Kirk said. "It means long hours
and lots of troubleshooting 24
hours a day, but there is a lot of
satisfaction in the job, too. The
real gratification is having a
monumental task ahead of you
and being able to bring people in
line, then seeing a real family?
mother, father and kids?having
a good time and appreciating the
outdoors together."
Superintendent Kirk is active
ly involved as a coach of Little
League Baseball. He and his
wife, Fonda, and their two sons,
Tobert III and Tennyson, are ac
tive members of the Kester Tem
ple AME Zion Church. Upon mov
ing to their new home at Satter
white Point, Kirk plans to
become active as a member of
the Henderson community.
Kirk succeeds Howard L.
Stewart, who has managed the
Kerr Reservoir for 20 years. He
has been promoted to Reservoirs
district superintendent in charge
of the three North Carolina
reservoirs?Kerr Lake, Jordan
Lake and Falls Lake. Presently,
these three state recreation areas
accommodate nearly two million
visitors per year, which is
expected to grow to over five
million in the next few years.
This is largely due to the opening
of more recreational areas at the
new Falls Lake and over 800 new
campsites at Jordan Lake.

Warren Jobless Rate
Shows Slight Rise
The jobless rate in Warren
County has increased by only six
tenths of a percentage point for
the first month of the calendar
year.
Statistics received from the
Employment Security Com
mission of North Carolina show
for January an unemployment
rate of 6.3 per cent as compared
to 5.7 percent for December

minimal when compared to the
experience of certain other coun
ties. Those counties experienc
ing the highest unemployment

cent), Hyde (20.4 percent) and
Tyrrell (19.6 percent).
Rates for neighboring counties
for January were: Vance (8.7
percent), Northampton (7.4 per
cent), Halifax (7.7 percent) and
Franklin (6.6 percent). The coun
ty with the lowest rate of un
employment, 3.0 percent, was
Orange.
