Track Team Prevails
In Southeast Meet
By GAKEY BALLANCE
Warren County High's track
team turned in a first rate per
formance recently in a meet at
Southeast Halifax. The Eagles
won the meet, totaling 68 points
to Southeast's 65. Warren Coun
ty did well in both individual and
team competition. The Eagles
had a first or second place
finisher in every event.
Warren County boasts the
defending ?????? T-a champion in
the 100 and 300 meter dash in
senior sprinter Randy Jordan.
Jordan's only problem so far this
season had been finding someone
who can challenge him. He runs
faster when he is up against
someone who can push him.
Jordan's best time in the 100
meter this year is 10.2 seconds.
Against Southeast Halifax, he did
not run the 100 because of a slight
injury.

Ten Top Money Winners Shown Following Awards Presentation
Virginia Fishermen Take $1500
Top Prize In Firemen's Tourney
A series of lucky strikes were
worth $1500 for two Virginia
fishermen taking part in the
fourth annual bass fishing tour
nament held by the Churchill
Five Forks Volunteer Fire
Department Saturday on Lake
Gaston.
Mac Elliott and Kirt Gravitt of
Clarksville landed almost 30
pounds of fish during the day
long event as 97 teams left
Eaton's Ferry Marina in search
of largemouth bass.
The largest individual fish? a
7.88 whopper? was caught by
Tim Francisco and Tommy
Ward of Danville, Va. The big
fish captured an $870 jackpot put
up by participants. In addition to
the big fish money, the twosome
landed over 15 pounds of bass,
good for third place and another
$500.
All told, some $4,000 was
guaranteed for participants in
the event, which Churchill-Five
Forks fireman Allan L. Adcock
said was the "most successful"
held by the 26-member fire
department which was
organized less than eight years
ago.
Registration for the tour
nament began at 4 a.m. Satur
day when the first team planked
down the required $60 to enter
and was treated to sausage
biscuits and coffee served by
firemen.
The event was co-sponsored by
Wooten's Marine of Roanoke
Rapids and Rocky Mount and
the Warren County Farm
Bureau Insurance Co. Ken
Smith of the Churchill-Five
Forks Fire Department was the
tournament chairman.
Scoring in the tournament was
based on the total weigh-in
pounds of bass caught by both
contestants. A limit of five bass
each was in effect.
The top ten places were won
by the following teams:
FIRST PLACE ($1,500)-Mac
Elliott and Kirt Gravitt of
Clarksville, Va., 29.54 pounds.
Sizzle Test
For a quick test to find out
where the coolant is going, warm
up the engine, turn off and with
draw the oil dipstick. Let oil
drip from it onto the exhaust
manifold. If it sizzles you have
an internal crack that's allow
ing coolant to get into the oil
system. If it doesn't sizzle, check
for a bad head gasket. A bad
gasket will allow coolant to seep
into cylinders and out the ex
haust.

Dual Victories
Recorded By JG
Two games were played be
tween the John Graham Yellow
Jackets and the Eastman Kodi
aks recently. The first game was
held on March 30, while the sec
ond game was held on April 11.
John Graham played well in both
games and posted two victories.
The first game started with
Michael Riggan as the starting
pitcher. On the first play, the
Jackets threw one of Eastman's
batters out at first. The next two
outs were made by the pitcher,
who threw two sets of strikes.
Bobby Hayes hit a homerun for
the Jackets as they began their
first inning at bat. The next hit
ter, Phillip Southerland, scored a
triple, but his play was useless as
the next two Jacket batters
struck out.
After a few innings of strike
and fly-outs, the Jackets found
themselves down, 4-1. Eastman
scored another run, leaving the
Jackets in the last inning with a
score of 5-1.
With two outs and a full count,
three of John Graham's players
scored runs from a Wallace Har
mon triple. Daniel Harris hit a
single, sending Wallace Harmon
in for another score.
In the end, the Jackets posted
a victory with a final score of 6-5
over the Eastman Kodiacks.
