As Outside Chores Begin,
Don't Neglect House Plant
You can get your fill of
scratching in the dirt, planting
and watering now that spring
weather has arrived, but leave
enough time to continue taking
care of the plants that are in the
house. Their needs don't change
with the change of seasons.
Just remember, the house
plants again will be the center of
attention next winter when
everything now turning green
outside fades back to brown.
The best method of feeding
house plants is to use liquid fer
tilizer, suggest North Carolina
State University agricultural ex
tension specialists.
Be sure to follow manufac
turer's directions when using a
soluble fertilizer. If you use a
dry garden type fertilizer,
dissolve one teaspoonful in a
quart of warm water. Stir well
and let stand overnight before
using. Then use enough of the
solution around well established
plants to wet the soil well.
Plants that have out-grown
their containers should be repot
ted in large containers.
A good potting medium is a
mixture of three parts loamy
soil, two parts peat moss and one
part coarse sand. To this mix
ture add one cup of 20 percent
superphosphate per bushel of
prepared soil. Bone meal may
be substituted for the super
phosphate.
Many house plants do better
out of doors in the summer, if
they are adapted to outside con
ditions. They may be grown on
porches, terraces or in the gar
den border. This would not apply
to African violets and certain
other sensitive specimens.
You can carry many types of
house plants through the sum
mer by burying them up to the
rim of the container in a choice
site out of doors. A layer of
gravel at the base of each pot
will assure good drainage.
