Miss Kear ney was a member of the MathCounts team at Norlina Middle School in 1986 and a participant for two years in the WCHS Odyssey of the Mind team in regional and state competitions. She served as a volunteer for the Special Olympics in 1987 and 1988, and is a member of the Super Eagle Chorus. Applicants for the school must complete a rigorous ad missions process that includes screening by state leaders in scientific and educational communities and members of the NCSSM faculty and staff. Semi-finalists are interviewed personally and rated on crea tive potential, internal motiva tion, intensity of interest and intellectual ability. Finalists must meet additional criteria that includes high scores on achievement tests, superior school performance in science and mathematics, evidence of analytic thinking and imag ination. "Preparation for admission to NCSSM begins in the ele mentary school," Mrs. Ardith Roddy, Warren County in structor of the gifted and talented, herself a mother of two NCSSM graduates, said. "It's a great deal of hard work, but these students are really prepared for it." NCSSM provides a residen tial, rigorous and comprehen sive education for academ ically-gifted secondary stu dents. The state legislature ap proved Governor Jim Hunt's plan for the institution in 1978. The "xhool enrolls 478 students from across the state, repre senting a sample of the state's finest young scholars, from 89 counties, at a cost to the state of $10,000 per pupil. In 1988, 49 NCSSM students were de clared National Merit Scholar ship Program finalists, the highest number for any school in the nation. It was the third consecutive year that NCSSM has led the nation in finalists identified. Each NCSSM grad uating senior typically at tracts more than $2 million in scholarship offers from post secondary institutions. Warren County High School Drama Guild Will Unveil First Offering On Friday Night The Warren County High School Drama Guild will make its debut on Friday, May 27, with the performance of the two-act com edy, Hev Teach! "We have a good group of students working on the production," says Artelia Covington, the play's director. "They're enthusiastic and dedicated. I'm really pleased with what we've accomplished in such a short time." Friday night's performance will take place at 7 : 30 p.m. in the high school theater. It is the culmination of many weeks of planning and hard work by Ms. Covington and the 21-member cast of students.
