Saws Not Always
The Proper Tool
Dan Campeau of the Warren
County Extension Office recent
ly said that "we tend to think of
a chain saw as a universal tool to
use in the forest or even around
the house. Folks tend to think of
it as a big Swiss Army knife with
a motor. But chain saws can be
a real safety problem when they
are used where another tool
would be better.
We often try to get a particular
ly felled tree that is hung up in
another tree down with a chain
saw. Using a "pry bar" or "cant
hook" to move or roll the hung
tree would be a lot safer and you
reduce the chance of damaging
your saw. Sometimes even shak
ing the tree will do the trick. But
be careful, even these methods
can be dangerous. The best tool
is a "come-along" or winch to
help you make the tree go where
and when you want it to.
When felling trees with a chain
saw, you should always keep one
or more plastic or aluminum fell
ing wedges with you. They're dirt
cheap, no trouble to carry, and
when teamed with the chain saw
make the greatest tool combina
tion since the knife and fork.
Read your chain saw owners
manual to see how to use a fell
ing wedge when cutting standing
timber.
Trying to prune a tree with a
chain saw can damage the tree
and you. Kickback injuries in
volving the head are common
results of this malpractice.
Always use a curved pruning saw
or bow saw to prune the limbs off
of your trees. -
There is always a big tempta
tion to use what you have in your
hands to solve a problem that's
different from the one you started
with. When what's in your hands
is a chain saw, put it down and
think again.

Five Locals
Taste Defeat
Although "sadder, but wiser"
following two recent losses, team
spirit prevails among the mem
bers of the 1988 Franklin-Warren
County Babe Ruth all-star base
ball team, Roy Pat Robertson,
assistant coach, said this week.
The team had travelled on
Thursday, July 14 to Pine Level,
where they squared off in first
round district tournament play
against Garner-Apex.
The Franklin-Warren team
was held to only three hits that
night and lost with a final score
of 12-1.
A similar uefeat awaited the
team last Saturday, July 16, when
the Franklin-Warren players lost,
16-5, to the Garner-Apex League
All-Stars.
Warren County's athletic prow
ess was well represented in the
tournaments by Tionne Harrison,
Ricky Branch, Yarborough Wil
liams and Roy Robertson, Jr. An
element of coaching savvy was
also provided by Roy Pat Robert
son, a team spokesperson said.
