Jt seems that it is hard for people to, understand that the present law is not a new innovation j; and that . it carries nothing revolutionary, in anyway," There is nothing in itjta bo f righ; tened. at; -and criticisms ; of the law are based, upon erroneous conceptions of the,law as a - gen -eral thi-ig. As every one should rememberj this is assessment year and even if the present law had not been enacted' thre would have been a re assessment' ' of propety just the same; - - ' The present law,4ike the for mer, and all other machinery acts heretofore passed, requires prop erty to be listed at its "true "value in money." "True value in mon ey", does not mean selling price, or what one has been offered, rr what one has asked for it, or what some laud company has adver tised it for. - A lot of times prop erty sells formore than its "true value in money." In assessing property, one must take into con sideration the situation; conveni ence, its income-producing power, etc. Of course, since the last assess ment, property has materially in creased in valuation and n j doubt the assessments willj accordingly increas. But there is no reason for any revolutionary increase The present law seeks, not to unduly raise assessments, but to equalize valuations. To this end one general county assessor and one assistant assessor for each township have been appoin ed whose duties are to visit- the taxpayers,, see their properties and help the owners to come at proper and equitable.Valuatiou. It is true that in the last legis lature, there were a few extremists who wished to revolutionize the method of assessing values, but the cool head and clear judgment of Hon. R. A. Doughtoh and oth ers prevailed 'and the present law was passed, whose principal ob ject is to equalize taxes. There is another thing that is being criticised without dause, and that is the cost of the assessors. The assessors are to oe paid a reason able amount by the county com missioners for the work, actua41y done. It will probably hot ost as much as in previous years and the result should at least be much more satisfactory Heretofore, t.liprA hftuft hoAn .l"irio noooaonra V v t ... w V rvk If . - L MUU VUUV.0- or rather-two assesssors and one list taker to the township, or -60 I in the county. Under the pres ent law there are but 21 for .the entire county. Those who are kickingabout new. offices being established for. assessors should note that 40 old ones - were abol ished and one new one establish ed. No tax law is perfect nor can it please everybody, but I we feel sure that when the people study the present law they- will like it better than- anv former law. . s- ,: ' )C ; President Diaz, of Mexico, . has indicated his willingness to re sign as-soon as peace is J restored. It was lying ojf the side of a big log sunning itself. Bill says it was the most "awful scarey looking snake he ever did see in all his bon days." It was a pieded 1 looking snake and 'vas ' all "quiled up." it appeared to be nearly as big as a man's thigh and. the longer Bill look ed at it the bigger the snake grew. He could see it widen out when it drew its .breath and he thinks it had a horn or sword on its, tail. Now, Bill says he really "aiut scared of nothing" and he wasn't afraid of the snake, but that he just naturally got away before he could kill the snake that is, Bill trot away, the snake didn't move.- Bill is rather of the opinion that the snake had a fw Dine-rooter bristles on its r back, but he isn't positive about that; as urgent business called him else w here before he -could make a thorough inves tigatioiv He is positive, how ever, that it was not a natural born native of. this country, and we are forced to conclude on Bill's evidence' that the snake was one of the animals which was dropped last- year from the tail of Halley's com -et.
