PROSPECTS FOR ALL BUSINESS LOOKS BRIGHT Favorable Trade De velopments Out weight Retard ing News A New York dispatch: With favor ab'e trade developments outnumber the retarding factors by a wide mar gin, the business outlook last week took on a rosier hue. Higher com modity prices, another series of satis factory half-yearly earnings reports and slowly increasing manufacturing operations in many industries laid the ground work for more cheerful senti ment. Recurrence of stiffer money rates for a brief period provided tangible evidence of a wider demand for funds from the interior. A genral strength ening of the money situation and in creased demands for crop moving pur poses and commercial activities was predicted by Charles E. Mitchell, pres ident of the National City Bank of New York, who said that higher rates should be welcomed as a sign of in dustrial expansion. Revival of busi ness in the fall, he said, could be ac complished without any strain on the nation’s credit resources. With current operations of about 60 per cent of capacity for the steel industry as a whole supported by the usual midsummer hand-to-mouth buy ing, the head of the Bethlehem com pany has predicted that the early fall demand would result in a sub stantial increase in production. Beth lehem’s present rate of production has been running 80 per cent above this time last year. Higher prices were quoted on a variety of steel products throughout the industry last week. Other commodities which reached higher price level included cotton, copper, rubber, lead, zinc, tin and YOUR DOLLAR WILL GO FUR THER BY TRADING WITH US. JUST RECEIVED Ladies’ White Kid and Felt Hats. A general advance in tires took place in response to soaring prices for crude rubber. No further changes were reported in oil or gaso line quotations, although the output and stocks on both crude and refined products continued steadily to de cline. Sugar was the principal weak spot among the commodities, fine granulated sugar selling at the low est price of the year in the New York market. The favorable operating position of most of the country's railroads was reflected in a series of favorable earn ings statements for Ji ne and in the maintenance of freight traffic at a level substantially higher than for the corresponding period last year. The American Railway Association re ported that the greatest number of •freight cars on record was placed in service during the first six months of the year by the Class One rail roads. Brittany is being supplied with a network of high voltage wires for the distribution of power by linking a number of steam operated plants and a new hydroelectric plant. For ditch digging in city streets a machine has been built that is equip ped with 20 shovels, attached to a huge wheel, powerful enough to sut through the hardest paving. In an attempt to prevent the extinc tion of moose, due to a lack of their natural food, a farm will be establish ed in Alaska where thew will be fed on hay, grain and grass. A London hospital has installed ap paratus that treats throat diseases with ultraviolet rays transmitted through a tube into the mouths of pa tients with little loss of power. A laboratory for radium research with special reference to the study of chemical effects of radium radiation has been established by the govern ment at Washington, D. C. At the beginning of the year Switz erland was obtaining approximately 2,000.000 horsepower from hydroelec tric plants and is building plants to develop 295,000 more horsepower. THE ZEBULON RECORD, JULY 31, 1925 MID-MONTH FARM NEWS WEATHhK. FAVORABLE TO MOST CROPS Dry weather has been the most damaging factor to crops in North Carol na during the period from June 15th to July 15th, according to reports just received by the Cooperative Crop Reporting Service. The excessive hot days and nights have been fine for cotton, but every section of the state excepting a few counties in the upper Coastal Plain h is suffered for moist ure. At this date last year, the cry was “Too much rain- grass taking crops.” The exact reverse is true as present, with crops remarkably clean and well-cultivated. During the past few days, showers, really showers of blessings, have fallen and | most farmers report their crops doing fine—some say best since 1919. SMALL GRAIN. FAIR TO GOOD grain crops are showing up good thi: j year, the yield is not expected to be above the average. However, very few report excessive damage from rust or other causes and the quality of the grain in the principal wheat areas is said to be only slightly below normal. PASTURES AND HAY CROPS INJURED BY DROUGHT The Northern Coastal counties, j where rain has been abundant, report excellent hay crops and pasturage. Dry weather has damaged hays in oth er sections, especially in the Mountain „nd upper Piedmont counties. While this is the prevailing condition, local showers in many counties have been very helpful and many good hay fields and pastures are to be found where so favored. The Coastal counties, pro ducing large quantities of cowpea and soy bean hays, report these crops in good shape. COTTON, GOOD Cotton growers in every section of the Belt report their crop as extra good. Lice in some Coastal Plain counties have caused broken stands but plants are in good shape. Numer ous reports from the northern cotton counties of “no weevils” leave us very skeptical as the season is early yet and weevil damage not apparent in those counties. CORN, SPLENDID Dry weather in the west haas held •orn back considerably, but on the I whole the crop continues to thrive. FRUIT AND TRUCK. FAIR Recent reports of considerable i storm damage in the Sand Hills sec tion around Candor, and hail damage to orchards, have been received. The most numerous comment from the trucking center is “fair.” GENERAL The chief topic of conversation with the farmers as well as with everybody else has been the extreme hot, dry weather, though the boll wee vil comes in for his share of abuse. Those that are so fortunate as to es- I cape him are dreading his appearance I and those on whom he is calling are wondering how they can get rid of him—some trying dusting. The Coastal counties seem to be the most effected, while the mountain sections, I having tlitle cotton, have escaped the weevil but the bean beetle has ar rived and is doing damage. Some reports indicate scarcity of labor, though making both ends meet, “Taxes” seem to be a topic in which every district is interested. The farm er need not think he has a corner on this subject, for it is one that is agi* tating The minds of all. In the central Coastal Plain, tobacco s the main issue, and some say they have no time for anything else. The consensus of opinions seems to be that the farmer is coming out on top this year, with good crops and good prices. Classified Ads.
