the stratosphere farther than any
one else had ever gone, came to
grief in a Nebraska corn field Mon

said to have cost more than half a
million dollars.
Magistrates Organize
COUNTY MAGISTRATES
ORGANIZE INTO “UNION”
Wake county magistrates have
oiganized a unit of the state asso
ciation. ’Squire H. A. Bland has
been named as president and V.
L. Biggs as secretary. The pur
pose of the association, as set out
in its constitution is to elevate the
magistrates’ courts and offices to
the position of dignity they should
have. Most folks, even the magis
trates, will admit that there is
room for some elevating.
Have faith in the Lord.

Bum Has Fortune
New Jersey police a few days
ago picked up an old man moping
along the road, with old gunny
bags for shoes, and dilapidated and
patched up clothing. When they
searched him they found that he
had more than ten thousand dollars
in his pockets. He said he was
walking because he had missed a

Henry Ford Now 71
Henry Ford, automobile magnate
was 71 years old Monday. Ford is
probably the richest man in the 1
world; almost certainly he is the j
wealthiest in America. Unlike a
gieat many other wealthy men he
has never given anything away.
Ford’s philosophy is that in put
tng the automobile within reach
of the average laboring man he has
made a more substantial eontribu-,
tion to the social good than if he >
had charged more for his cars and
given the money to charity. There
is some logic in that position, but
Mr. Ford has taken care of himself
very well indeed •while helping the
poor folks to ride.

Highway Patrol
Escort Activities
Considerable comment has been
occasioned iby the recent report
of the State Highway Patrol which
showed that a good part of the
activities of that department had
consisted of furnishing motorcycle
escorts for motor parties. This
comment has been mostly unfavor
able. Admitting justification for a
h rge part of the criticism, there
|is also justification for a large
[part of this activity.
Preceding the governor on his
visitis to football games and other
events about the state, furnishing
an escort of honor for various oth
er dignitaries, real or spurious, is
a useless and absurd thing for the
patrol to do. But pacing funerals
to keep them moving at reasonable
speed, escorting motorcades where
many cars tend to congest traffic,
and such like duties are proper and
necessary functions of the highway
patrol.
The question is whether the good
done by the patrol justifies putting
up with the nuisance involved in
this; pageantry. That there is ar
gument both for and against the
patrol is conceded by all fairmind
cd citizens.
Have faith in the Lord.

YOUNG DEMOCRATS HAVE
A FINE CON VENTION
(Continued from first page)
body had a good time.
Doyle Alley of Waynesville was
elected president, Miss Mabel Pen
ny of Raleigh, vice president, and
John C. Rodman of Washington
national committeeman.
Governor Ehringhaus made his
usual speech commending his ad
ministration, Senators Bailey and
Reynolds assured the youngsters
that the country is safe so long as
the Democrats are in power and
they are in Washington. A “wet”
resolution, asking for a state liquor
control law was passed—and just
as soon as the vote was taken the
governor left the platform. Later
an effort w r as made to get that
vote stricken from the record, but
that effort failed.
