NATIONAL President Roosevelt adminis tered a well-deserved, stinging re buke to the scandal mongers and unfair critics of the administration and the new deal over the radio the past week. He will go on the air again Sunday night to give the people another account of his stew ardship. He is the first president to adopt this method of informing the country on the affairs of Gov ernment. Every time he sneaks over the radio he completely knocks arguments and plans of his critics into a cocked hat. The passing of General Hugh Johnson out of the National polit ical picture will be the cause of mingled emotional reactions over the on ire Nation. It cannot be fie lded that the General was the most picturesque and forceful personal ity the present administration has produced. 1 lis job was the biggest and most difficult one ever wished off on any man. He performed it with vigor and ability and the NR A, if perpetuated, will be a monument to his memory. In nam ing Hon. Clay Williams as his suc cessor the President has made a wise decision. If he succeeds as well with the management of NRA as he did with the management of the great Reynolds Tobacco Company he will also win for himself im mortality. The fine Italian hand and influence of Ex-Governor O. Max Gardner is seen in the selec tion of Mr. Williams for this im portant position. Mr. Williams made Max Gardner Governor of North Carolina and very doubtless was largely instrumental in mak ing him the Chief Counsel and i super-lobbyist for the National j Textile Association. The former I business connections of Mr. Wil-i bams with the tobacco interests will probably be construed by the extreme new dealers as an evi dence of the purpose of the Pres ident to turn to the right in his future activities. So far the admin istration of the NRA has been along extremely liberal lines and the appointment of Mr. Williams may be notice to the country that the President has gone as far to the left as he intends to go. STATE lion. Herbert Gulley, the Fed eral Prohibition Enforcement Of fi< ial for North Carolina is making quite a reputation by his vigorous and successful prosecution of liquor law violators in this state. He goes on trial at Columbia the coming week for the alleged search and seizure of liquor in a raid he is reported to have made on a pri vate residence down East without a search warrant a few weeks ago. The fact that he found and de stroyed a large amount of the con trabrand seems to have been lost sight of entirely by the court offi <iais. If he is successful in his ef forts to dry up North Carolina he will deserve the thanks and appro bation of all decent citizens who respect the laws of the land. It does not seem possible for the state authorities to curb the boot legging industry or else they are not honestly trying to do so. All ever Raleigh and Wake County and other sections of North Carolina ib' *it liquor dealers ply their trade brazenly and without fear of ap prehension. If they happen to the misfortune of being caught they are let off with small fines or short prison sentences while disreputable lawyers fatten off of the fees they receive for appearing for them. The Ninety Nine Year Lease of the Atlantic and North Carolina Railroad has been cancelled by the Board of Directors on account of the default of the Norfolk and Southern Railroad. They are more t’ an two years behind with their THE ZEBULON RECORD, ZEBULON, NORTH CAROLINA, FRIDAY, OCT. 5, 1934 rental and the proposed Port Ter nii al at Morehead City is being lelayed by reason of that fact. Just what disposition w r ill be made of this valuable state property re mains for future determination. The Governor and Board of Direc tors believe other arrangements can be made that will be more ad vantageous to the interests of the ! state than the present lease has been. It is now up to the legal de partment of North Carolina to de termine the status of the lease, which has about Sixty more years to run before it expires by limita tions. In the meantime the More head City Port Terminal project remains in a state of suspended animation. | The North Carolina Utilities ; Commission continues to thresh j over a lot of old straw while the ! people who patronize the Public Utilities ard the Telephone Trust get no relief from the unfair and exorbitant rates they have to pay for the service. The new Utilities ■ Commissioner seems to be follow ing the example of the old Corpor ation Commissioners who always staged long drawn out public hear ings just before election time and promptly forgot all about reduc tions of the rate structure after the elections were over. Governor Ehtirghaus could not perform any greater service for the people than to turn loose in the Utilities Com- I mission his official Bloodhound, Dr. Mark Noble and let him have a » complete house cleaning of that department. The many holdovers left from the old Corporation Com mission in the department have never had the interest of the pub lic at heart and they should be cleared out completely. “The Christ of the Andes,” a 26- sot statue standing on a high point in the Andes Mountainsfi between Argentina and Chile, bears the in scription (translated) “Sooner shall these mountains crumble into dust than Argentines and Chileans break the peace to which they have pledg ed themselves at the feet of Christ t lie Redeemer.” Deposits of iron ore in Brazil ex ceed those in the United States.
