They are very pretty and the only trouble in the way of our owning some is that they do not seem to have any that may be exchanged for a deficit. NOT THE PAPER, BIT THE COMMUNITY To us it seems that the reason a man should take the paper published in his own town or community is not so much for the value of the publication from a literary or political stand point, but as a measure of his interest in mat ters pertaining to his home, his church and his school. It is entirely probable that the news in a small paper would be unimportant to a big daily; that the social functions it mentions might be of little interest to strangers; that ev en the weather and the condition of the crops might fail to thrill city-dwellers. But they are all of consequence to those concerned with them and give a fairly definite picture of what is go ing on. Announcements of meetings, church services, etc., may be worth little to most readers the greater part of the time; but occasionally they are of great value and the small paper is always glad to give them prominence. Do you love your community? Do you like its paper? If it is not what it should be, help make it better. LAW HAS NO LIFE We would like for the advocates of state con trolled liquor, if it is not supposed to be state controlled as it is, to tell us what, if the state can t control it when it is outlawed, will happen when this wet camel gets its head into the tent? The best the Hill Bill can offer is better (?) liquor and a cloak for the bootlegger to carry on his business behind the state fence. Law with in itself is dead, till made alive and effective by public sentiment and behind officers ofthe law. LARGER PAPER PLANNED For some time we have hoped to be able to offer our readers a larger and better paper. We are still not able, but have an idea of trying it anyway. It will cost us more money and more work, but we feel it might be of more service to the community. If you care for the change, please pay up your subscription in order that some bills may be met, and we shall do our best to increase the size of the Record. 4735 North Carolina —Wake County— In The Superior Court — NOTICE OF SUMMONS WAKE COUNTY vb. Lillie Wilks and Husband W r ilks The defendants above named will take notice that an action as above entitled has been commenced in the Superior Court of Wake County, North Carolina, for the purpose of foreclosing certain Sheriff’s Cer tificates of Sale for taxes for the year 1930, owned and held by W’ake County, and for other taxes costs THE ZEBULON RECORD, ZEBULON, NORTH CAROLINA, FRIDAY, MARCH FlßST^lggo and interest and penalties due Wake County, which are liens upon that certain tract, lot or parcel of land listed for the year 1930 and other years shown in the complaint in said action in the name of Lillie Wilkes in Wake Forest Township, Wake County, North Carolina, described as follows: 1 Lot Juniper Street And the relief demanded consists wholly or partly in excluding all persons from any actual interest or lien in or to said lands. And the parties will further take HURRAH FOR JUDGE DANIELS A few days ago Judge Frank Daniels render ed a decision in court in Goldsboro holding that landlords who had not contracted with farm ten ants for the year 1934 be compelled to retain them in the same relationship and under the, same terms for the year 1935. This decision came too late for those tenants who had to give up their cotton and tobacco acreage last year and move, but it will save many who otherwise would suffer great hardsip and loss in 1935. What the government failed to do, Judge Dan iels has done and is to be congratulated in using some common sense and justice in this case. IT S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT If Raleigh votes for a city manager we be lieve it will remove police, firemen and other politically appointed office holders and appoint ives from the influence and control of profes sional politicians. This is the bane of a govern ment that controls appointmens that are made with the primary object of strengthening its power and continuing its existence. WHISKEY WHIFFS The advocates of the Hill Bill point to the raid made a few days ago by federal agents on boot leggers and distillers around White Lake in Eastern Carolina as an argument for repeal. It is our opinion that that only shows the indif ference of North Carolina officers to the Turl ington Act. What is there to hinder a repetition of this even w r ith the Hill Bill a law? INDIFFERENCE DEADLY A prominent newspaper man stated in an ed itorial sometime ago that it did not make any difference to him whether we have legal liquor in North Carolina or not. Just such statements of an attitude from prominent men who are per sonally dry is all the liquor crowd wants to car ry on their nefarious business unmolested. Just this sort of thing is what has made conditions such as they are in North Carolina and it would nullify any other law just as surely. * —_ DO YOU KNOW? Does Zebulon have any ordinance concerning vicious dogs being allowed to run at large? Not long ago a minister in this town told of being chased on the street bv a bulldog and we know of several cases where children and even grown persons have been bitten as they were passing peaceably along our sidewalks. No owner of a dog wants to see his pet killed, for the old law, “love me, love my dog,” has nev er been repealed. Yet there is another and a higher law which commands that one love his neighbor as himself, which could hardly be in terpreted to mean exposing him or his child to pain and danger because of a dog’s not being kept in bounds. With the present epidemic of rabies among dogs the danger from being bitten is greatly in creased. The Pasteur tratment is expensive and painful, yet the only sale thing when a dog has not been vaccinated against rabies. For the sake of us all we respectfully recom mend to the mayor and the town commissioners that in case there is no rule covering such cases, one be formulated. And if there is such a rule, it should be enforced. notice that they are required to ap pear before the Clerkof the Supe rior Court of Wake County, North Carolina, at his office in the City of Raleigh on the 14th day of March, 1935, and answer or demur to the complaint filed in said action or the plaintiff will apply to the Court for relief demanded in the complaint.
