Senate Passes 3 ! Per cent Sales Tax NINE BASIC FOODS EXEMPT „ i Weary hours of debate on the 1 sales tax ended Friday afternoon I when the senate at 3:00 passed a 3% general sales tax. Nine basic foods, such as meat lard, flour, mo lasses are exempt a s the bill now stands, but A. J. Maxwell, Commis sioner of revenue estimates that these nine exemptions will cost the state $1,500,000 annually, so they may decide its too much to lose in view »f the fact that the money raising ability of the revenue bill] is some $5,321,000 below allotments* already made. I The upper house has also voted to divert $630,000 a year from the highway fund to go into the gen eral fund. A number of new bills have been introduced in the house during the week. Perhaps the most important were those introduced by Dr. Me- j Donald whose proposals would give small school communities the same chance for extension of their terms as larger units have. It seems a* last that the house is getting in- j terested in schools. Other bills were passed by the: house to increase the pay of public utilities commissioner from SSOO i to $5,500 a year; to boost the sal ary of parole commissioner from $3,000 to $4,500 a year; to increase legislators pay from S6OO to S9OO per year, require railroads to main tain minimum crews of five men. New house bills of interest are ' measures to make kidnapping a capital felony and to require auto- j mobiles to have safety glass. George I). Tharrington, lax Collector. I stood watching the tempest rage, And then I blessed the rain; I For rain is not urdike the tears, That soothe a soul-felt pain. And when I saw the trees bend low Before the blasting wind, I thought of wills bent down— Os weak ones who had sinned. | And then a lull —! The sun came out so bright, It seemed symbolic of God’s love That makes all wrong things right.—Hunter. lax Collector.
