THE ZEBULON RECORD, ZEBULON, NORTH CA ROLINA, FRIDAY, JUNE TWENTY-FIRST, 1935. THE ZEBULON RECORD Member North Carolina Press Association Published every Friday By THE RECORD PUBLISHING COMPANY Zebulon, N. C. THEO. B. DAVIS Editor Entered as second-class mail matter June 26 1925, at the Postoffice at Zebulon, North Caro lina, under the Act of March 3, 1879 Subscription Rates: One Year $1.00; Six Months 50c; Three Months 30c. All Subscriptions Must be paid in Advance. TRAVEL AND TEMPERATURE For some several reasons those beautiful cir culars and prospectuses which we receive in sisting that we visit this or that wonder spot of the world for our vacation fail to register. They might be said to leave us cold. But, considering the position of the mecury in the thermometer, their leaving us cold is something for which we might be grateful. HOME STUDY We should like to emphasize as much as pos sible some remarks made by Supt. Massey of the Zebulon Baptist Sunday School when that body last met. Dr. Massey requested that pa rents of pupils kept away by the danger of in fantile paralysis help their children by seeing that study of the regular Sunday School lessons is kept up and records made of work done. While the little ones are not given the usual amount of freedom time will hang heavily on their hands and the studying of Sunday School lessons is the best way to occupy at least a part of it. In no other way can interest in this work be sustained, and parents or older members of the family who fail to see that the younger chil dren keep abreast of the work required for the series of lessons for the quarter are neglecting their duty. DESCENDANTS OF JEHU A man who is comparatively a newcomer to our town expresses his amazement and alarm at the way cars are driven over our streets. He says we all drive as if we were going to fires and that when we do have a fire we will even pass the fire truck if its speed does not satisfy us. The fact that Zebulon is too small to afford traffic policemen at various points does not free us form the obligation to be careful. For after all the caution that does not proceed from within and that does not have its source in an unselfish regard for the rights of others is but a feeble thing at best. Laws that are obeyed un der compulsion only are disobeyed when desire is strong. And search of the town ordinances fail ed to reveal anything about speed limits. A sort of informal caucus at the ice-plant (the mayor was absent) brought the statement from one man that Zebulon used to have a sign stating the speed permitted but that somebody ran over it and knocked it down and it has never been replaced. The town clerk is of the opinion that we have no set of exact rulings, but that we are responsible for our driving and liable to arrest if careless or reckless. It seems that to all intents and purposes we are back in the days of the Judges of Israel when it comes to driving cars: "And every man did that which seemed right in his own eyes.” The Book also 9ays: "The driving is like the driving of Jehu, for he driveth furiously.", SILENT CONSERVATIVES Margaret Culkin Banning in a recent article declares that conservatives in this day stand silent and let the radicals fill the air with shout ings. She urges that those who believe in work ing for a fair profit, in the perpetuation of es tablished customs or in old principles speak on these things, not permitting those who would tear down these old bulwarks to go wholly un answered. The writer asserts that one main trouble that causes such disconcerting silence among the conservatives is the fact that they are naturally quiet and timid, little given to ranting and to platform orating, while radicals seldom miss an opportunity to address a crowd. That many of the would - be revolutionists are inconsistent is the claim made in the article, illustrated by an anecdote which gives the writer as one of the characters. She said she asked a lecturer who was paid a specified sum for his speaking against the profit system if he did not think it out of place for him to make a profit by seeking to tear down profits, and that he replied, ‘‘Oh, that’s all right. What’s wrong with it?” In connection with the above we should like to mention those who speak so often of the fail ure of the church to function as it should, of the hypocrites on every church roll, of the al most total absence of ‘‘old - time religion,” et cetera, et cetera, and who when in need of aid expect the church to be the first to appear with relief. “The heathen Chinee” is not the only pe culiar person. Seen and Heard NOT ALL ON HIGHWAY Carl Geoch in “The State” speaks in compli mentary terms of the homes on the highway that passes through Zebulon. But some of the town’s most attractive homes are not on the main highway and one wishes Mr. Georch might take time for a tour of all Zebulon's streets. BEAUTIFUL HEDGE The hedge at the Wiggs home is probably the most attractive in town. In addition to well trimmed privet English Ivy twines in and out adding its glossy greenness to the smaller leaves of the privet and filling out what otherwise might be scanty foilage near the ground. JOHN FINCH HOME KEPT CLEAN And if any place in town is more raked and swept, more cleanly kept, clear down to the far thest corner of the backlots than is the John Finch home, we should like to be told about it. It would surely be a marvel. LOCAL MAN GETS NICE SUNTAN One lady in town remarked this week that her husband, who wears glasses, has been ordered by the doctor to spend as much time as possible in the sunshine. She says the treatment seems to be helping him, but he has become so brown that when he takes off his plasses and exposes two white circles around his eyes he looks al most startlingly queer. EARLY VEGETABLES Passengers on the Norfolk - Southern a few years ago were often amused by hearing the porter call a station thus: “LaGrange, the gar den spot of the world. No one has thus labeled Zebulon, but it might not be amiss, seeing that several gardeners had up to June 1 gathered nine different vegetables from their gardens, not to speak of berries, early peaches, etc. Professional Cards DR.
