THEZEBULON RECORD Member North Carolina Press Association Published every Friday By THE RECORD PUBLISHING COMPANY Zebulon, N. C. thf’o" b' davTs~ Editor Entered as second-class mail matter June 26 1925, at the Postoffice at Zebulon, North Caro lina, under the Act of March 3, 1879 Subscription Rates: One Year $1.00; Six Months 50c; Three Months 30c. All Subscriptions Must be paid in Advance. THE OLD AND THE NEW o According to common usage, the new year begins on a date that need not be mentioned, but in chronology, as in other matters, there is room for differences of viewpoint. The Jewish people prefer a variable time near the first of October. The sixteenth of July is good enough forth Mohammedans. September 1 or October 1 meets the requirements of those who count times from the beginning of the world. For the American of pronounced patriotic tendencies July 4 is the basis, and year 160 is already well under way. Really, it makes no difference when the year begins. In the same sense used when we say there is “No East, no West”, we might say there is no New Year, since time moves on without change of rhythm from one year to the next. And it may be well to remember also that a new beginning may be made at almost any time one desires it strongly enough. Susan Coolidge expressed it well thus: ©t*** 1 ® 1 «fff | ■Krccftsted and p§in, o FOUND IN SCRIPTURE o No one who reads Roger Babson’s report and predictions for the New Year can fail to be im pressed by the closing words. “Faith, integrity, and other fundamental virtues,” held by Mr. Babson as necessary for permanent recovery, are certainly among the good and perfect gifts coming down from God the Father. Also found in the Bible are the words: “Happy is that peo ple whose God is the Lord,” and “Righteousness exalteth a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.” Paul added that “Godliness is profi- New Year Statement M. E. Coyle, president of Chev. rolet Motor Co., states that indica tions point to a good year for husi. ness. During last year this firm expanded production capacities by one-fourth and feels that barring unpredictable accidents this rate should continue, which will produce effect upon many industries. In 1935 Chevrolet produced more than one million cars, and for 3 years each annual output has been 200,000 more than the preceding year. In November and December more than 180,000 Chevrolets were sold. Alcohol to Blame During the last month 434 driv ers’ licenses were revoked. It is a striking fact that of this number 421 were revoked for drunken driv ing, leaving only 13 for all other causes. Zebulon has only one name listed for the month, Wendell has two, Spring Hope 2, Bailey 2, Mid dlesex one. Os the 13 revoked for other causes than drunken driving four were for transporting whiskey THE ZEBULON RECORD, ZEBULON, NORTH CAROLINA, FRIDAY, JANUARY THIRD, and one for allowing a drunk to drive the owner’s car. The remain ing eight were revoked for hit-and run driving. t Angier Policeman Held for Killing C. F. Deans, chief of police at Angier, and Oris Pollard, police man there, are held under heavy bond for the killing of G. F. Collins a farmer living near Angier. It is charged that Pollard beat Collins to death with his blackjack with the knowledge and assent of the chief. Collins was arrested for be ing* drunk, and Pollard says that cl e p r ShoeS Snow Shoes, Rubber Boots, Guns, Rifles, Shells, Air Ri fles. Special Low Prices.
