And 80 England continues to have that bond and symbol of unity that binds all classes and parties together in the person of Edward VIII. America has no king, needs no king, wants no king, so long as the Constitution remains the bulwark of class and creed, people and party* In America the Constitution stands forever as the safeguard of all the people, the symbol of unity, "aloof from all political parties, free from the strife of tongues,” a mighty bulwark against temporary emergency and party power. A king may be good but the Constitution is bet ter. Long live the Constitution, the defense of our weaknesses, the safeguard of our liberties! POOL ROOMS IN ZEBULON We are publishing elsewhere in the columns of the Record the agreement or conditions on •which any one may open and operate a pool room in the town. We wonder if the good peo ple of this community remember a few years ago when a pool room opened in the same build ing in which we are told another will soon be in operation. Some of the laziest and most thriftless people of town and country made the place a gathering and hanging out place. It was not long till reports began to circulate about the profanity, vulgarity, gambling and even drinking that went on in the pool room. Our boys began to frequent the place and mothers waited long in the night for them to come home. Now we do not condemn pool within itself more than other games of like nature. All who frequent such places are not the riffraff of so ciety. A young man who was raised in the city said to us the other day when we told him about a pool room soon to be opened in JZebuflon:' “It is the worst thing that can happen to the town.” We hope our mayor and town commissioners will consider well and long the possible con sequences that may follow pool rooms in our community. It happens that few of them have sons to be tempted or led into sin, but there are other citizens who have boys and we hope they will consider these when they take upon themselves the responsibility of allowing this questionable and dangerous thing to open its doors to our men and boys alike. If the fathers, mothers and church people of Zebulon oppose pool rooms in our town, let them send in their protest at once* Morals are i . * * • » * pore than money and boys are more of an asset to the community than pool rooms. And it has seemed impossible heretofore to keep such places above reproach. (A of the agreement or contract was qof s': *uMe at this time. It will appear in our next issue.) THE ZEBULON RECORD, ZEBULON, NORTH CA tOLINA. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 7th, 1936 WHOSE BUSINESS IS IT? w'e note that Senator Reynolds is raising quite a racket in Washington about his gooc friend, General Macloskey’s not being promoted. We wonder just why a Senator elected to repre sent the people of North Carolina should use his time and take the time of a Committee in try ing to do this for a friend in the United States a. my. O well, perhaps his time spent that way will be worth about as much to the folks back home as in any other way. FROM SIDEWALK TO SKYSCRAPER A half century ago a little boy played on the sidewalks of the Eastside ofl New York jCifiy. Today he sits in an elaborate office a hundrec stories above the sidewalks of that great city. Once he was a poor boy who knew the pinch of cold and the gnaw of hunger. But today he is a director in corporations that aggregate more than two and a half billion dollars. He hobnobs with the rich and high hats the poor. His name is A1 Smith. MAKING THE COUNTRY “Edgar Clarke, 12 year old Wake county boy died in a roadside camp between Raleigh and Durham Monday night from drunkenness"— News Item. This thing liquor is saving our country With apologies to the News and Observer edi torial. RUSSIA SHAMES AMERICA Vodka is the Russian name for an intoxicat ing drink. At the outbreak of the World War Tzar Nicholas signed a decree stopping the sale of vodka. For a time the Bolsheviks ap proved this decree, but in 1925 they restored the manufacture and sale of vodka. The end of prohibition in Russia was celebrated as in the United States by prolonged excesses. But when the Five Year Plan was introduced in 1928 the leaders saw the evil effects of the un restricted use of vodka and began a system of restriction of this intoxicant. Workers clubs were organized in the factories and collective farms, in which vodka sales were forbidden, and recreational and educational clubs were substituted. During 1935 the Soviet State manufactured 9,470,000 liters less of this liquor than it did the preceding year. The Bol shevik government has found that the use of vodka interferes with development of indus trial efficiency and so have embarked on a program of elimination of vodka and the sub stitution of social and industrial clubs, for they say they have found that workers will abandon saloons when offered better uses for their leis ure time We may scoff at and scorn Russia for her crazy isms, but America may learn much from this country that sees that there is no “forgotten man” among her people and ar the same time seeks that which will save them for the State from the curse of drink. SEEN AND HEARD Town Philosopher Bernice Bunn says "The reason why people are not Christians is ignorance.” And we re marked, "and meanness”. He replied, "Yes but that’s igqorance.” Come to think about it, we believe Bernice was about right. “Cleaned Out” Reports say that the Mr. Trevathon who lost his home and everything in it yesterday morn ing and also the colored man who lived on George Taylor’s place were both literally cleaned out, not having a piece of clothing or an article of furniture left from the fires that consumed their homes. Uncle Sam is not doing much now in the way of relief to the people and the Lord is giving the folks another chance to exercise . the Biblical grace of charity. A half-page ad in the last Saturday Evening Post invites people to North Carolina where, it is asserted there are “cozy little cottages with gardens where you can live comfortably on SIOO a. month. Lots of us already here would be glad of a chance to try out that assertion. , Our Duffel Bag Why take Kfe so seriously ? You'll never get sut of it alive. The world would be a far pleasant er place And in heaven more pews would be took If women were all they wished to be And men were as good as they look Another good thing about telling the truth is that you don’t have to remember what you say. Willie’s father was a doctor. A man called to see him, but he was out. “When will your father re turn?” he asked. "I don’t know”, said Willie, “but I expect he will be gone a long time. He’s out on an eternity case.” There’s hope for you. Noah was 600 years old before he knew how to build the ark.
