A WIDOW BY DEATH We heard a man make a plea for help for a widow an.i her son last Sunday at a country Sunday School. He said, “She is a good hard working woman and is a widow by death.” After thinking over his statement and considering the reports concerning widows of other sorts, we decided that his distinction was well expressed. oOo SERVICE THAT SATISFIES The Carolina Power and Light Co. has re duced its light rates again. Using considerable current, we naturally are pleased. From our ex perience, we believe there are few public utilities in the State that seek to give service that satis fies like this corporation. Government control may be good, but we are very well satisfied with what we have. oOo RI \ T TO MY CUSTOMERS AND FRIENDS EVERYWHERE RONDAL PHILLIPS Groceries DON’T MISS %Mr DEBNAM’S * Special Christmas Bargains Christmas Trees Tree Lights and Bulbs Footballs Harps Pocket-knives Watches Rifles Wagons Tricycles Pop-guns Homs, Etc. I % | ZEBULON | HOW TO SETTLE THE LIQUOR QUESTION It is probable that almost every citizen of the state has his solution of this problem that grows more problematical every day. By the seventh of January it will eclipse the Duke of Windsor, Old Age Pension, Schools, roads and every other matter of public concern in North Carolina. The more the question is discussed the more muddled it will become and it is prob able that the General Assembly under the stress and excitement will make another mess of it be fore it is settled to the dissatisfaction of every body. Here is what we believe should be done. Just as soon as permanent organization is effect ed, let the General Assembly pass a bill calling for a referendum of the question within thirty days, or sooner if possible. This will head off hot air politicians and fanatics on both sides and the expressed will of the people will be more nearly learned than by any other means. With the will of the people known it will not take the Legislature very long to shape up such laws as necessary to carry out the mandates of the peo ple. No other way is so fair, no other way will satisfy the people of this state. Our own opinion about the whole matter is that in this section drinking is getting worse. More people are drinking. We are having more accidents from drunken drivers. A ten minute drive gets one to a county ABC store. The lit tle town of Middlesex, we are told, does the big gest business of any store in Nash county. And most of its customers come from Wake and Johnston counties. Nash county is profiting by the revenue made from sales to our citizens. This patchwork system proposed to be propogat ed by the Liquor Commission will not work. One county will profit financially while others will lose both financially and morally. Let North Carolina be wet or dry, but do not set liquor oases all over the state. Again, we say let people themselves undo by their suffrage what they did if that is their will, but never let one man from each county speak for his con stituency on a question so vital to every mem ber of every fireside in our state. Let the people speak through the ballot! Write your own check: A Record And Receipt When you pay by check you have: An accurate record of all your money transactions.
