THE little pot holder shown in the
sketch below will save many a sud
den finger burning. Follow these instruc
tions :
Use 1 ball each of white and color of a
crochet cord. Use steel crochet hook No.
3. Use thread double throughout —1
strand of white and 1 strand of color.
Beginning at center ch 8. join with si
st to form ring. Ist rnd: Ch 3 <to count
as d c), 15 d c in ring. Hereafter pick
up only the back loop of each d c.
2nd rnd: Ch 3, d c in same place as si
st. * d c in next d c, 2 d c in next, ch 3,
skip 1 d c, 2 d c in next d c. repeat from
* around. Join last ch 3 with si St to
3rd st of ch-3 first made.
3rd rnd: Ch 3, d c in same place as si
st, 2 d c in next d c, d c in each of next
2 d c, * 2 d c in next d c, 2 d c in next
ch st, ch 3, skip 1 ch st, 2 d c in next ch
st of same ch-3, 2 d c in Ist d c of next
group, d c in each of next 3 d c, repeat
from * around. Join last ch-3 with si st
to 3rd st of ch-3 first made.
4th and subsequent rnds: Work in this
manner of increasing at each d c-group
thus having 6 additional d c in every d c
group in each rnd. When block mea
sures 6 inches square, break off.
Make another piece same as this and
attach the two together with a row of
s c around. Do not break off but con
tinue for scalloped edging as follows:

from • around. Fasten and break off.
To make loop, make a chain 6 inches
long and work a row of s c. Fold loop
and sew to one corner.

All Set for a Splash in Southern Seas
GIRLS may be dressing in the comfiest
of clothes during the cold winter days,
up north, but you should see them in
the warm sun of southern skies.
Remember, it's still summer, even
though the month may be January, along
the beaches of Florida, southern Call-*
fornia and the Gulf Coast.
The beach is the center of popular at
traction, down south, therefore you should
prepare yourself with the proper display
for the southern sands. Here are two
ideas that you might consider.
That girl in the vast and amazing sun
hat wears a scatter print in red yellow,
green and white.
It is trimmed with ric-rac in white,
and all is made of imported spun rayon
which never bats an eye when she dives
into the water.
Little sister at the right hasn’t a shadow
of worry on her lovely face. It may be
the white suit, also of imported spun
rayon, which will stay white even if the
clouds roll up.
It washes and irons without protest.
Romper type in scatter print, or aii
white and tailored, it makes no difference.
There’s far more to the winter beaches
than the climate.

A SWEET young bride asked me this
question: ‘ Why must we settle down
just because we re married? Why can't a
young fellow' and a young girl get married
and still be able to do thrilling things?"
Why, indeed? I know one young man
who was married last month. His job is
to travel throughout the country audit
ing books for his company. Ha he bought
k nice little bungalow for his bride to
wait in while he travels? Yes, and no.
He has bought a bungalow on wheels,
a modern trailer with all the comforts
of home. The girl wanted a home with
Venetian blinds. She has them in the
trailer. The man wanted a bedroom w'ltfi
a glass roof. He has that in the trailer.
And the kitchen is equipped to any
woman's de ire.

There's no hardship involved. Built-in
radio, inlaid linoleum on the floor, box
springs and innerspring mattresses, clnna
closets, wardrobe closets, electric refrig
eration, stainless steel sink, and even a
telephone to connect with the drivers
seat —yes, all of these go into auto cruis
ers just as easily as they do in the stucco
houses.
So you tee, my young triend and ms
wife will be snug and sale on the broad
highway. They desire happiness—they
are starting out together with courage
and originality.
I- know another man who used the
trailer idea to put new enthusiasm in ms
life and enable him to do the things fie
always wanted to do. An army officer,
he was recently transferred from Wash
ington, D. C to the Presidio in San Fran
cisco. He was given tw r o and a half
months’ leave in between.

So he bought a cozy trailer, set up his
wife and three little boys in all the com
forts of a rolling home, and started off to
see these United States which he has
sworn to defend. The boys had a separate
bedroom for themselves. “Those kids cer
tainly learned geography,” he wrote. “And
maybe I didn't learn to know them and
my wile better than ever before.”
It seems to me that many divorces hap
pen not because the man and woman are
actually tired of each other. No, I think
too often they are weary of their sur
roundings, feel that life has passed them
by. But they don't quite understand all
this.
Perhaps the 1937 automobile show, with
its trailer exhibits, will prove to be a har
binger of better times, but a boon also to
more permanence in American marriage.
After all marriage is not a place, it's a
state. It's a good state only so long as
a boy and a girl love each other, work
and live together, and keep moving for
ward and upward along the road of life.

Your Eyes
Tell Age
HERE'S a deep, dark secret. Take a
look at any woman's eyes. ‘They'll
tell you her age. But if you don’t want
others to fathom that secret in your
eyes, better take the advice of Gertrude
Niesen. who's noted for her beautiful
eyes—dark gray, oblique, trained in luxur
iant lashes. These have given her promi
nence in the movies in which she has
starred.
“Certainly 1 think beauty routine should
begin with the eyes,” she says. ‘The
motion picture actress, the stenographer,
librarian and clerk all suffer eye strain.
That means they may get wrinkles pre
maturely.
"Here's my private method of banishing
the strain. Daily I take eye exercise.
Move the eyeballs, with lids open, from
one side to the other. Next, with lids
closed, move the eyes up and dow'n. Fol
low these very simple exercises taithfully
and you will find that they strengthen
that fragile network of muscles control
ling the eyes.’’
A morning eye bath with boric acid
solution, with an eyecup, is a help. Alter
being in a smoky or too crowded room,
bathe them in 1 pint of warm water in
which teaspoon .‘ait has been dissolved.
This is as beneficial as some of the more
expensive preparations on the market.
Those are a few more of this lovely star s
suggestions.
Twice a week she dips pads ol cotton
into hot boric acid solution, pressing
them free of excess water, and places
them on the eyes for 10 minutes at a
time. When the pads cool, she dips them
again into the hot boric acid.
At night, she massages the entire eye
area with a nourishing cream. “Does
wonders for pouches and creased lids,”
she confesses, opening her own lush eyes
to prove her point
Make-up. applied with restraint, can
enhance allure. A blue shadow with a
touch of silver in it is the best color for
gray or blue eyes, Miss Niesen thinks.
Apply the paste only after the lids first
have been softened by a touch of vase
line, then carefully removed. Dark brown
mascara is more flattering to most eyes
than black.
“If it is necessary to pluck your eye
brows to create a clean arc, then do It.
But please don't make those lines too
narrow. It detracts from your beauty,”
this young star advises. “Befor*- plucking
with tweezers, apply hot compresses to
brows. The pores will widen, thereby
making the pulling less painful.
