SOIL-CONSERVING CROPb INCREASE VALUE OF CCr?N Vcj/i/e per Acre AFTER FALLOW J Jig] More corn can be produced per acre if the crop is raised on fields where soil-conserving crops have been grown the season before the corn is planted, according to spec ialists of the State College exten sion service. The picture above shows the increased value of corn yields when the corn crop followed rye and when it followed clover. These were the average results of a 12-year test. GOOD RECORD Mrs. Roy Lewis, who lives in Zebulon, stated to the associate editor of the Record that raising vegetables for the market pays well. In proof of her statement Mrs. Lewis said that last year she sold vegetables that brought in $147.00 besides what the family ate during the summer and canned for winter. All were sold on the Zebulon mar ket. Mrs. Lewis furnished several grocers with what they wanted from her garden and had an ar rangement with Hocutt Grocery Co. to take the rest on commission, paying only for those that were sold and returning to her the ones left on hand. “But I never took back anything except four small squash,” she remarked. By selling only on the local market the ex pense of transportation to Raleigh was saved. Great care was taken to have all vegetables fresh and cool when taken to the grocers. They were gathered very early in the morn ing before the sun had a chance to shine on them and were kept in the shade until sold. This enthusiastic and energetic gardner already has about one fourth of an acre planted in early peas and has sowed tomato and pepper seed. She feels that a can nery in Zebulon would be a fine thing for the community. In ad dition to other help it would pre vent a glut on the market and keep prices nearer at a level.
